SOREN

KIERKEGAARD
SOREN AABYE KIERKEGAARD

 Born: May 05, 1813 in Capenhagen, Denmark

 Died: November 11,1855
 19th Century Danish philosopher and theologian
 Profound and prolific writer
 “Father of Existentialism”- He is considered to be
the first existentialist
 His philosophy was designed to deepen the reader’s
subjective passionate engagement with ultimate
existential issues
Existentialism

 It emphasizes the existence of the individual

person as a free and responsible agent
determining their own development through acts
of the will
 Kierkegaard’s heartfelt view was that existence
in all aspects is subjective and ambiguous

1. Existence is always particular and individual

2. Existence is primarily the problem of existence
Three modes of existence:

1. AESTHETIC
-a redefined hedonism, consisting of the search for
pleasure.
Example: Sleeping all day, eating whatever you want

2. ETHICAL
- involves commitment to one’s duties which are
guided by social norms .
Example: Not committing abortion
3.RELIGIOUS
- submission to God, and only God’s will.

 The conceptual distinction between good and evil

is ultimately dependent not on social norms but
on God
 It follows the Divine Command
Example:
The story of Abraham who is known as the “Father
of Faith”, he was commanded by God to sacrifice
his son Isaac
CHRISTIAN ETHICS

 Kierkegaard's theological work focuses on Christian

ethics
 The institution of the Church, the differences
between purely objective proofs of Christianity, the
infinite qualitative distinction between man and
God, and the individual's subjective relationship to
the God-Man Jesus the Christ, which came through
faith.
Famous Quote about Life

“ Life must be
understood backward.
But life must be lived
forward”
PAST + PRESENT = FUTURE
“THERE ARE TWO WAYS
TO BE FOOLED. ONE IS
TO BELIEVE WHAT ISN`T
TRUE,THE OTHER IS TO
REFUSE TO ACCEPT
WHAT IS TRUE.”
“Life was not a problem
to be solved but a
mystery to be lived.”
“Either/Or: A Fragment of life”

ON PURPOSE AND POTENTIAL

If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for

wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of the
potential, for the eye which, ever young and ardent,
sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints, possibility
never. And what wine is so sparkling, what so
fragrant, what so intoxicating as possibility.
“The Journals of Soren Kierkegaard”

ON TRUTH

The truth is a trap: you cannot get it

without it getting you; you cannot get
the truth by capturing it, only by its
capturing you.
