How large should a sample be?
Many researchers find this a problem.
In fact, many rely on old methods to
determine the sample size they need
in their investigations. This problem
should be addressed carefully
because needlessly large samples
are a waste of important resources.
On the other hand, insufficient sample
size may lead to poor results.

STEPS on how to solve for the
SAMPLE SIZE involving population mean:

1. Given the confidence level, determine

the confidence coefficient.
2. Given all the needed values, substitute it
to the derived formula.
STEPS on how to solve for the
SAMPLE SIZE involving population
proportion:
1. Given the confidence level, determine
the confidence coefficient.
2. Determine the value of p hat and q hat.
3. Determine the margin of error E.
4. Given all the needed values, substitute it
to the derived formula.
Example: (involving population mean)
1. In a certain village, Victor wants to estimate the
mean weight in kilograms, of all six-year old
children to be included in a feeding program. He
wants to be 99% confident that the estimate of
mean is accurate to within 0.06 kg. suppose from a
previous study, the standard deviation of the
weights of the target population was 0.5 kg. What
should the sample size be?
Given: Confidence level = 99% Z = +2.58
/2

Standard Deviation = 0.5

Margin of Error = 0.06
Example:
Solution:
2
n = (2.58)(0.5)
0.06
2
n= 1.29
0.06
2
n= 21.5

n = 462.25
n = 463
Example: (involving population proportion)

1. Mary wants to know, with 95% confidence, the

proportion of households who like to use detergent
X. A previous survey showed that 42% like to use
detergent X. Mary likes to be accurate within 0.02
of the true proportion. What sample size does
Mary need?

Given:
Confidence level = 95% Z /2 = +1.96
p = 0.42
q = 1-0.42 = 0.58
Margin of Error = 0.02
Example:
Solution:
2

n = (0.42)(0.58) (1.96)
0.02

n = (0.42)(0.58)(9604)

n = 2339.53

n = 2340
Group Activity:

How many

SAMPLES?
Instruction:
• Group yourselves according to your hobby.
• Each group will be given a set of problem/situation
to solve for the sample size.
• You will be given only 5 minutes to work on
your group.
• After 5 minutes, each group must post their output
on the board and a yell of the group will be
observed before the presentation of outputs.
• One representative of each group must present
their outputs and explain.
• Team STUDIUS will be the first to present, to be
followed by Team Playful, Team SOCIALS and Team
ARTISTS.

In a university campus, reviewing habit of students has a mean

length of 15 minutes with a standard deviation of 0.85
minutes. A professor wants to estimate the true mean length of
the reviewing habit with a maximum error pegged at 0.09
adopting the 95% confidence interval. How many students
does he need?
Standard deviation (sigma) = 0.85
Margin of Error E = 0.09
Confidence level = 95%
TEAM PLAYFUL

In a school playground, playing habit of students has a mean

length of 10 minutes with a standard deviation of 0.90
minutes. A teacher wants to estimate the true mean length of
the playing habit with a maximum error pegged at 0.04
adopting the 90% confidence interval. How many students
does he need?
Standard deviation (sigma) = 0.90
Margin of Error E = 0.04
Confidence level = 90%
TEAM SOCIALS

In a restobar, the owner engaged the services of a private

opinion pollster to determine the sample size needed among
his customers to interview about their socializing habit.
Previous polls revealed that approximately 75% of the
customers love to socialize. The owner adopted 99% level of
confidence and off the population value by at most 0.06.
p hat= 0.75
Margin of Error E = 0.06
Confidence level = 99%
TEAM ARTISTS

In an Art Museum, the caretaker engaged the services of a

private opinion pollster to determine the sample size needed
among his clients/visitors to interview about their creation of
ART habit. Previous polls revealed that approximately 55% of
the visitors is not with the ART habit. The caretaker adopted
95% level of confidence and off the population value by at
most 0.08.
q hat= 0.55
Margin of Error E = 0.08
Confidence level = 95%
