The Role of Cohesion in Some Selected Political Texts: A Discourse Analysis Study

This document outlines the goals and methodology of a study analyzing cohesion in political texts. The study aims to identify the cohesive devices used by politicians, examine grammatical and lexical cohesion, and investigate how political texts are connected. It will analyze speeches by American and British politicians using Halliday and Hassan's model of cohesion. Results will be presented on the occurrence of devices like ellipsis, reference, substitution, and lexical cohesion. The document describes the chapter structure of introducing the topic, reviewing literature, presenting data analysis, and stating conclusions.

The Role of Cohesion in Some Selected Political Texts: A Discourse

Analysis Study
1.1 The Problem of the Study
According to Halliday and Hasan (1976), Halliday (1985)
and Hasan (1984) the type, number, and degree of
utilization of cohesive devices used in the text contribute
to the cohesiveness of a text. In spoken and written
English discourses, accordingly, individual clauses and
utterances are linked semantically by grammatical
connections (McCarthy, 1991), which make a text
cohesive.
1.1 The Problem of the Study
An example extracted from Obama’s
speech “On the Death of Osama Bin
Laden”
We offered our neighbors a hand, and we
offered the wounded our blood.
The repetition of the pronoun we, the
verb offered to link the sentence and to
reaffirm the idea. Also the use of the
conjunctive and to link the two sentences
together.
1.1 The Problem of The Study
Another example is Bush’s speech entitled “9/11 Address to
the Nation”
America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so
this time.
In this example, it can be seen that the verb do so
substitutes stood down. Also, the conjunctive before and
and are used here in order to link the text together and to
give it its unity.
1.2 Aims Of the Study
The study aims at:
1.Showing the cohesive devices used by
politicians in the texts, their types and the
number of their occurrence in the text.
2.Examining the grammatical cohesion such
as reference, substitution, Ellipsis,
conjunction and lexical cohesion such as
collocation and reiteration in these texts.
1.2 Aims of The Study
3.Investigating the surface linking or connectivity of
political texts. This is to establish how the texts are
strung together so that the understanding of one
textual element is dependent on that of the other.
1.3 Hypotheses
The study hypothesizes the following:
1.The various cohesive devices are used by
the politicians in order to affect the
audiences.
2.Cohesion is highly used to give the text its
unity and without which there would be no
text.
3.Certain cohesive devices are used more
than others and the degree of their use is
variable.
1.4 Limits of The Study

1. The present study is limited to political

texts of American and British politicians.
2. It is limited to the investigation of
cohesion in political texts.
3. The present study is to examine the
grammatical and lexical cohesion within
these texts.
1.5 Procedures of The Study

1.A theoretical background is offered about

discourse analysis and cohesion.
2.Data analysis depends on Halliday and
Hassan’s (1976) model of cohesion. It
divides cohesive devices into grammatical
and lexical devices.
3.Detailed analysis of randomly chosen
texts following the adopted model of
analysis.
1.5 Procedures of The Study
4.Statistics are to be provided according to the
occurrence of the cohesive devices such as ellipsis,
reference, substitution and lexical cohesion such as
collocation and reiteration.
5.In the light of the findings, a number of
recommendations and suggestions for further
research are presented.
1.6 Chapterization

1.Chapter one: presents an introduction into the

present study. The problem of the study, aims of
the study hypotheses, limits of the study and
procedures are to be presented in this chapter.
2.Chapter Two: is a review of literature in the
field of discourse analysis. It introduces the
various cohesive devices. Also, it is to provide an
account about the previous studies in the field
of discourse analysis in general and in cohesion
specifically.
1.6 Chapterization
3.Chapter three: contains data analysis. It is the practical
chapter in which the chosen data will be analyzed
according to the model. It is to examine whether the
chosen data contain cohesion and its organization in
these data.
4.Chapter four: introduces all conclusions,
recommendations and suggestions for further research
in the field of discourse analysis.
