The Role of Cohesion in Some Selected Political Texts: A Discourse Analysis Study
The Role of Cohesion in Some Selected Political Texts: A Discourse Analysis Study
Analysis Study
1.1 The Problem of the Study
According to Halliday and Hasan (1976), Halliday (1985)
and Hasan (1984) the type, number, and degree of
utilization of cohesive devices used in the text contribute
to the cohesiveness of a text. In spoken and written
English discourses, accordingly, individual clauses and
utterances are linked semantically by grammatical
connections (McCarthy, 1991), which make a text
cohesive.
1.1 The Problem of the Study
An example extracted from Obama’s
speech “On the Death of Osama Bin
Laden”
We offered our neighbors a hand, and we
offered the wounded our blood.
The repetition of the pronoun we, the
verb offered to link the sentence and to
reaffirm the idea. Also the use of the
conjunctive and to link the two sentences
together.
1.1 The Problem of The Study
Another example is Bush’s speech entitled “9/11 Address to
the Nation”
America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so
this time.
In this example, it can be seen that the verb do so
substitutes stood down. Also, the conjunctive before and
and are used here in order to link the text together and to
give it its unity.
1.2 Aims Of the Study
The study aims at:
1.Showing the cohesive devices used by
politicians in the texts, their types and the
number of their occurrence in the text.
2.Examining the grammatical cohesion such
as reference, substitution, Ellipsis,
conjunction and lexical cohesion such as
collocation and reiteration in these texts.
1.2 Aims of The Study
3.Investigating the surface linking or connectivity of
political texts. This is to establish how the texts are
strung together so that the understanding of one
textual element is dependent on that of the other.
1.3 Hypotheses
The study hypothesizes the following:
1.The various cohesive devices are used by
the politicians in order to affect the
audiences.
2.Cohesion is highly used to give the text its
unity and without which there would be no
text.
3.Certain cohesive devices are used more
than others and the degree of their use is
variable.
1.4 Limits of The Study
