One of the worst things about drugs is that
they most commonly affect young people.
WHY?
What is wrong with being YOUNG?

There are many difficult physical and
emotional changes that take place when
young people move from childhood to the
teenage years, a period often called
adolescence.
This is generally the critical time when
most young people begin experimenting
with drugs.
It is a lack of power that pushes young
people to seek “freedom” in drugs.
This lack of power may be felt as boredom,

as neglect, as abuse, as starvation, as a
lack of opportunities to earn, etc.
And since power is something that is never

given freely, young people need to learn
how to become more powerful.
What are drugs?
A psychoactive substance people take to

change either the way they feel, think, or
behave.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DRUG USE
The key is change.

It is important to watch for any significant
changes in your student’s/child's physical
appearance, personality, attitude or
behaviour.
Physical Signs
• Loss of appetite, increase in appetite, any changes

in eating habits, unexplained weight loss or gain.
• Slowed or staggering walk; poor physical
coordination.
• Inability to sleep, awake at unusual times, unusual
laziness.
• Red, watery eyes; pupils larger or smaller than
usual; blank stare.
• Cold, sweaty palms; shaking hands.
• Puffy face, blushing or paleness.
Physical Signs
• Smell of substance on breath, body or clothes.

• Extreme hyperactivity; excessive talkativeness.
• Runny nose; hacking cough.
• Needle marks on lower arm, leg or bottom of feet.
• Nausea, vomiting or excessive sweating.
• Tremors or shakes of hands, feet or head.
• Irregular heartbeat.
Behavioral Signs
• Change in overall attitude/personality with no other

identifiable cause.
• Changes in friends; new hang-outs; sudden
avoidance of old crowd; doesn't want to talk about
new friends; friends are known drug users.
• Change in activities or hobbies.
• Drop in grades at school or performance at work;
skips school or is late for school.
• Change in habits at home; loss of interest in family
and family activities.
• Difficulty in paying attention; forgetfulness.
Behavioral Signs
• General lack of motivation, energy, self-esteem,

"I don't care" attitude.
• Sudden oversensitivity, temper tantrums, or
resentful behavior.
• Moodiness, irritability, or nervousness.
• Silliness or giddiness.
• Paranoia
• Excessive need for privacy; unreachable.

• Secretive or suspicious behavior.

• Chronic dishonesty.
• Unexplained need for money, stealing money or
items.

Possession of Dangerous Drugs:
a) Penalty - life imprisonment to death and
fine: P500,00.00 – 10M
(1) 10 grams or more of opium;
(2) 10 grams or more of morphine;
(3) 10 grams or more of heroin;
(4) 10 grams or more of cocaine or cocaine
hydrochloride;
(5) 50 grams or more of methamphetamine
hydrochloride or "shabu";
(6) 10 grams or more of marijuana resin or
marijuana resin oil;
(7) 500 grams or more of marijuana; and
(8) 10 grams or more of other dangerous drugs
Possession of Dangerous Drugs
b) Otherwise, if the quantity involved is less than the
foregoing quantities, the penalties shall be graduated as
follows:
1. Life imprisonment and fine: 400,000.00 - P500,000.00, if the
quantity of methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu" is
ten (10) grams or more but less than fifty (50) grams;
2. Imprisonment 20 years and 1 day to life imprisonment and
fine:400,000.00 – P500,000.00, if the quantities of dangerous
drugs are five (5) grams or more but less than ten (10) grams
of other drugs or three hundred (300) grams or more but less
than five (hundred) 500) grams of marijuana; and
3. Imprisonment 12 and 1 day to 20 years and a fine ranging
from P300,000.00 – P400,000.00, if the quantities of
dangerous drugs are less than five (5) grams of other drugs
or less than three hundred (300) grams of marijuana.
Possession of Equipment, Instrument,
Apparatus and Other Paraphernalia for
Dangerous Drugs.
Penalty - 6 months and 1 day to 4 years and
fine 10,000.00 - 50,000.00
Use of Dangerous Drugs:
Penalty:
1. 1st Offense - minimum of six (6) months
rehabilitation
2. 2nd Offense – 6 years and 1 day to 12
years and fine ranging from P50,000.00
to P200,000.00
