TESTING ON AGGREGATES

Crushing Strength Test:

Take rock or stone of size 25 cm in diameter and 25 cm in height .

Place the cylindrical rock or stone on the compression testing machine.

Apply the load at a uniform rate until the crack formation in the rock .

Crushing strength= Load on failure in rock / area of the rock

Crushing Value Test:

The test mould-a 152 mm diameter open ended steel cylinder with square
base plate; plunger having a piston of diameter 150mm.
Sieve the material through 12.5 mm and 10.0mm IS sieves. The aggregates
passing through 12.5mm sieve and retained on 10.0mm sieve is taken.
Pour the aggregates to fill about just more than 1/3rd depth of measuring cylinder.
Compact the material by giving 25 gentle blows with rounded end of tamping rod.
The measuring cylinder contains the amount of aggregates to be used to
prepare the test specimen.
Place this assembly on the pedestal of the compression testing machine.
Apply the load at a uniform rate of 4 tones per minute until the total applied
load is 40 tones.
Take the aggregate out of the cylinder and sieve them through 2.36 mm IS sieve.
Weigh the fraction passing through it .

Impact Value Test:
Sieve the material through 12.5 mm and 10.0mm IS sieves. The aggregates
passing through 12.5mm sieve and retained on 10.0mm sieve comprises the test
material.
Determine the net weight of the aggregates in gram(W)
Fix the cup firmly in position on the base of machine and place whole
of the test sample in it and compact by giving 25 gentle strokes with tamping rod.
Remove the crushed aggregate from the cup and sieve it through
2.36 mm IS sieves
Aggregate Impact Value (percent) = W2 / W1 X 100
Total weight of dry sample ( W1 gm)
Weight of portion passing 2.36 mm sieve (W2 gm)
Impact Testing Machine
Abrasive Test:
Take 5 kg of sample aggregate. And Cast iron or steel balls,
approximately 48mm in diameter is mixed with aggregates.
Place the aggregates and abrasive charge on the cylinder and
fix the cover.
Rotate the machine at a speed of 30 – 33 revolutions per minute.
The number of revolutions is 500 for grading .
The entire stone dust is sieved on 1.70 mm IS sieve.
The material coarser than 1.7mm size is weighed.

Original weight of aggregate sample = W1 g

Weight of aggregate sample retained = W2 g
Weight passing 1.7mm IS sieve = W1 - W2 g
Abrasion Value = (W1 - W2 ) / W1 X 100

Flakiness and Elongation Test:
Sieve the sample through the IS sieves (as specified in the table).
Take a 2 kg of aggregates of each fraction to be tested and weigh them.
In order to separate the flaky materials, gauge each fraction for
thickness on a thickness gauge.
Weigh the flaky material passing the gauge to an accuracy of
at least 0.1 per cent of the test sample.
In order to separate the elongated materials, gauge each
fraction for length on a length gauge.
Weigh the elongated material retained on the gauge to an
accuracy of at least 0.1 per cent of the test sample.
