OBJECTIVES
To know about
 The basics of sewing machines.

 The different types of sewing machines.

 Sewing machine parts.

 The different manufacturers of sewing

machine.
 Finally about the different attachments used
in sewing machine.
SEWING MACHINE
 A sewing machine is a textile machine
used to stitch fabric, and other material
together with thread.
 Sewing machines were invented during
the first Industrial Revolution to decrease
the amount of manual sewing work
performed in clothing companies.
 The sewing machine has vastly improved
the efficiency and productivity of fabric
and clothing industries after the invention
by Thomas Saint in 1790.

TYPES OF SEWING MACHINE

There are three types of sewing machines

 Mechanical sewing machines,

 Electronic sewing machines, and
 Computerized sewing machines.
MECHANICAL SEWING
MACHINES
 From 1800 (as their introduction) till 1960's, all sewing
machines were mechanical.

 Mechanical sewing machines are controlled by a rotary

wheel. They have knobs and dials to make changes in
the tension or the length or width of the stitch.

 These are less expensive and are the simplest type in

terms of build. Bernina 1008, Kenmore 11101, Singer
6038, Elna 2005, Kenmore Mini, Kenmore 15212, and
Sears Kenmore 15218 are some of the mechanical
sewing machines available in the market.

ELECTRONIC SEWING
MACHINES
 By the year 1970, electronic sewing machines became
popular.
 There are more features in an electronic sewing machine
than in a mechanical sewing machine.
 Instead of turning knobs or dials, electronic sewing
machines use button to adjust length or width of the
stitch.
 Electronic sewing machines have motors; each one is
assigned with a specific task and is run by electricity.
 Singer 7442, Singer 7462, Singer CE-100 Futura, Elna
3230, and Janome Decor Excel 5124 are some
instances of electronic sewing machines.
ELECTRONIC SEWING
MACHINE
COMPUTERIZED SEWING
MACHINES
 Computerized sewing machines are similar to
electronic sewing machines and are very fast and
easy to use..
 They use the same chips and stepper motors that
are used in electronic machines. Besides, they
posses a microprocessor which helps the sewing
machine to accept new information in a card form
and create stitching patterns based on the
information loaded in the card.
 Singer CE-200 Quantum Futura, Singer Quantum
XL-6000, Brother SE270D, and Janome 8080 are
some examples of computerized sewing machine.
COMPUTERISED SEWING
MACHINE
 Modern machines may be computer
controlled and use stepper motors or
sequential cams to achieve very complex
patterns.
 Most of these are now made in Asia and the
market is becoming more specialized
VARIOUS TYPES OF
STITCHES USED
 Sewing machines can make a great variety of
plain or patterned stitches.
 Ignoring strictly decorative aspects, over
three dozen distinct stitch formations are
formally recognized by the ISO 4915:1991
standard , involving one to seven separate
threads to form the stitch.
Lockstitch

 Lockstitch is a stitch in industrial "single needle"

sewing machines from two threads, one through
a needle and one coming from a bobbin or
shuttle.
 Each thread stays on the same side of the
material being sewn, interlacing with the other
thread at each needle hole by means of a bobbin
driver. As a result, a lockstitch can be formed
anywhere on the material being sewn; it does not
need to be near an edge.
OVERLOCK STITCH
 Stitches with one to four threads, one or two
needles, and one or two loopers. Overlock
sewing machines are usually equipped with
knives that trim or create the edge
immediately in front of the stitch formation
Chainstitch

 Chainstitch was used by early sewing

machines
 It has a major drawback: the stitch can easily
be ripped out, and can rip out by itself if the
thread breaks at any point.
 The chainstitch is still used today in clothing
manufacture, though due to its major drawback
it is generally paired with an overlock stitch
along the same seam.
Coverstitch
•Coverstitch is formed by two or more needles and one
or two loopers.
• Like lockstitch and chainstitch, coverstitch can be
formed anywhere on the material being sewn.
•One looper manipulates a thread below the material
being sewn, forming a bottom cover stitch against the
needle threads.
• An additional looper above the material can form a top
cover stitch simultaneously.
• The needle threads form parallel rows, while the looper
threads cross back and forth all the needle rows
