The current state of the

tourism and hospitality

industry in the Philippines
Tourism Industry
also known as the travel
industry, is linked to the idea
of people travelling to other
locations, either domestically
or internationally, for leisure,
social or business purposes.
HOSPITALITY
INDUSTRY
is generally recognized
as a section of the wider
service industry, with a
focus on leisure, rather
than more basic needs.
The main sectors
of tourism in the
Philippines are:
Casino and Gambling

The gaming/casino industry in the

Philippines is becoming more developed, on
the back of growing supply and heightened
competition, a recent independent report
stated.
Cruise Lines

The Philippines is in the process of becoming one of

Asia’s top international cruise destinations, and there is an
increasing interest from Cruise Lines to boost infrastructure
development in order to support international cruise ships.
Island Resorts

The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands (only

2000 are inhabited); each island offers a rich biodiversity
ranging from tropical rain forests, mangroves, and coral
reefs to mountain ranges, world class beaches, beautiful
islands and a diverse range of flora and fauna.
General Tourism/Business Visits and Hotels

The hotel industry in the Philippines is expected

to see a continued growth over the next five years,
although a decline in hotel occupancy rates in the
first half is forecasted.
Yachting and Sailing

Tourism in the Philippines has grown steadily during the

last few years. There are increasing numbers of sailing
enthusiasts looking for sailing and yachting experience amongst
the Philippines archipelago. The only way to get to many of the
Philippines islands is by sea, and many of the islands are
inhabited.
Scuba Diving

The Philippines have the most species in the least

space of anywhere in the planet. Out of the planet’s 500
coral species, more than 400 are in the Philippines. The
Philippines is at the center of the world’s Coral Triangle,
and host to a very rich marine biodiversity, the whole
Philippine archipelago can be considered a dive location.
Medical Tourism
-Medical tourism in
Philippines is a rapidly
growing market.
The Tourist
Tourist is a person travelling to another location,
away from their usual social environment, for
business, pleasure or social reasons. By most
accepted definitions, to be classed as a tourist, a
person needs to stay at that location for longer than
24 hours, but for no longer than one year.
What Are the Benefits of the Tourism Industry?
Tourism offers a wide range of benefits,
including economic benefits for countries
attracting a large number of visitors, due to the

Manila — Capital of the Philippines

The capital of the Philippines - its

heart and soul -- is Manila. It sets
the rhythm of life in this archipelago
and is a pulsating hub that blends
the Oriental with the Occidental,
the quaint with the modern, the
mundane with the extraordinary.
Fort Santiago, Intramuros
History buffs will appreciate the trip to
this famed citadel. The Fort is one of
the most important historical sites in
the country—several lives were lost
here during the Spanish Colonial Period
and World War II, not to mention that
the execution of our national hero Jose
Rizal happened here as well. Now, you
can choose to book an educational tour
to learn more about our recent history
or you can explore the colonial
structure and take in the beautiful
architecture on your own.
Banaue Rice Terraces —
Ifugao Province, Cordillera

Because of its high altitude,

Banaue is often described as
"where land merges with the
clouds to meet the heavens"
with the rice terraces as "the
stairway to the sky."
Chocolate Hills — Province of Bohol

Chocolate Hills is a series of 1,268

perfectly symmetrical, haycock-
shaped hills that rise some 30
meters above the ground. A National
Geologic Monument, these unique,
rock formations were cast after
million years of evolution.
Boracay — Aklan
Boracay Island is famous for its
fine white sands and lush tropic
scenery. Tourists from all over the
world have found solace in this tiny
piece of paradise, making it a place
people come back to again and
again
Cebu — The Gateway to a
Thousand Journeys

The island-province of Cebu was

where the Portuguese navigator
Ferdinand Magellan planted the
Cross of Christianity in the name
of Spain in 1521. But even before
Cebu became the Occidental
gateway to the Orient, it was
already a popular entry point
among Asian merchants.
Davao — Land of Plenty

"Kadayawan sa Dabaw" is Davao City's

premier festival and showcases the
natural and cultural bounty of the land. A
movable feast in August, the week-long
merrymaking highlights the manifold
tribal cultures of the region which are
vividly expressed in traditional songs,
dances, games and crafts. It is also on
this occasion when a lively trade fair,
capped by a flower-and-fruit float parade,
takes place. Street dancing and popular
entertainment complete the celebration.
Palawan — The Last
FrontierUnique to Palawan is its
megadiversity.

For a long time, Palawan's bountiful

resources, abundant wildlife and
extraordinary natural beauty are known
only to the many ethnic communities
that thrive in these islands and a few
other daring settlers who wanted to
live in unpolluted surroundings.
Vigan — Old World City

One of the earliest Spanish

settlements in the country, Vigan
was founded in 1572 by Juan de
Salcedo who patterned its design to
that of Intramuros (Old Manila). It
became the seat of the Archdiocese
of Nueva Segovia and was called
Ciudad Fernandina in honor of King
Ferdinand.
The Philippines' foreign tourist arrivals hit
7.4 million in the first 11 months of 2019,
up by 15.58 percent compared to the
same period in 2018, the Department of
Tourism (DOT).
For the first 11 months of 2019, DOT data
showed that South Korea remains the
country's top tourist market with 1,785,357
tourists, followed by China with 1,626,309,
and the United States with 954,952.
IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM INDUSTRY
Tourism industry is important for the benefits it brings and
due to its role as a commercial activity that creates demand and
growth for many more industries. Tourism not only contributes
towards more economic activities but also generates more
employment, revenues and play a significant role in
development.
PROS AND CONS OF
TOURISM
Top 5 Pros of Tourism
1. Wealth Generation
One of the most obvious and essential pros for
tourism is, of course, the money it brings in. Tourism
can easily generate a massive amount of wealth.
2. Development of Country
Along with the wealth brought in, countries can further develop
and grow. The money that comes in from tourism provides
security and ensures countries that have poor infrastructure or no
lucrative exports the opportunity to grow.
3. Job Creation
Tourism is responsible for generating many different jobs within a
country, thus being a hugely positive influence on the economy.
One of the other direct benefits of tourism on a country is the
undeniable growth in jobs, and the number of business
opportunities that open up for the local people.
4. Encouraging Unity
Tourism is a unique industry that boosts the unity between people
of all different colors, backgrounds, and traditions. It also allows
people to learn more about each individual country’s history and
culture.
5. Conservation
One of the biggest pluses of tourism is that it becomes the main
reason that countries put money into protecting and preserving
local wildlife, and even historic monuments or structures within
both rural and urban surroundings.
Top 8 Cons of Tourism
1. Environmental Damage
When it comes to tourism, we are inviting thousands, and in some cases,
millions, of foreigners into countries for a vacation. This can lead to
immense environmental damage, especially in destinations that are
extremely popular and tourist-heavy.
2. Exploitation of Culture
With so many tourists coming to enjoy certain famous lifestyles and
traditions, we begin to see the commercialization of culture. This is
something that can negatively impact the local people of a country,
because instead of respecting and admiring the culture from a distance,
we impose countless tourists into the traditions.
3. Poor Behavior from Tourists
The more people a country invites within its borders each year, the more
the possibility of bringing in tourists who do not honor the local traditions
and customs. Sometimes, tourists do not respect local cultures, and will
break certain unspoken (or spoken) codes of conduct that are held very
highly by the indigenous people of a country.

4. Foreign Business Owners

There are many cases when travel agencies, hotels or restaurants within
popular tourist hotspots are owned by foreign businesses. These are
usually the companies that are making the money from a country, while the
local businesses fall short.
5. Culture Clashes. Tourists often lack respect for local traditions and
culture, refuse to follow local dress standards, get drunk in public, or
behave rudely or inappropriately towards locals.
6. Environmental. Tourism can often cause environmental damage with
risks like erosion, pollution, the loss of natural habitats, and forest fires.
Even if tourists behave responsibly, the sheer number of them can cause
damage.
7. Cultural. The commercialization of culture can undermine the soul of a
tourist destination. Local traditions that have a rich cultural heritage are
reduced to wearing costumes and putting on acts for the tourists in return
for money.
8. Attracted by opportunity, foreign
companies begin poaching business away
from local businesses.
Contribution of Tourism to the
Philippine Economy in 2019
From January to September 2019, a total of 6,161,503 people
visited the country, compared to 5,387,458 in 2018. Even lean months
for the tourism industry in the Philippines such as September helped the
country receive a total of 606,553 visitors, which is 17.09 percent more
than last year.
Most of the country's visitors came from Korea, China, USA,
Japan, and Taiwan. Korea has consistently topped the list for the first
three quarters of the year with a total of 1,450,792 visitors, followed by
China with 1,359,817. Meanwhile, 792,619 people came from the
USA, 518,211 from Japan, and 252,578 from Taiwan.
Among the recognitions received by the
Philippines this year is ranking eighth in the 20
Most Favorite Countries in the World of
the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice
Awards, garnering a score of 90.63
from 600,000 readers
During the Asia and Oceania Gala Ceremony of the
World Travel Awards 2019, the DOT was announced as
"Asia's Leading Tourism Board," surpassing tourism
boards from 11 other countries. In the same event, the
Philippines was also recognized as "Asia’s Leading
Dive Destination."
