Definition of Solid Lubricant: By: Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Haji Shaikhan Nadzemi

Solid lubricants are films of inorganic or organic compounds or metals that are used as powders or thin films to reduce friction and prevent damage between surfaces in relative motion. They are commonly used in cases involving high speeds or loads, inaccessible machine parts, or high temperatures and pressures, and work by providing a dry, solid layer between moving components. Some common solid lubricants include graphite, molybdenum disulfide, and Teflon.

Definition of Solid

Lubricant

Definition and General
• A solid lubricant is a film of solid material composed of inorganic or
organic compound or of metal.
• Is material used as powder or thin film to provide protection from damage
during relative movement and to reduce friction and wear
• Others term commonly used for solid lubricant include dry lubrication, dry-
film lubrication and solid-film lubrication.
• The substances most commonly used as solid lubricants are graphite,
molybdenum-di-sulphide, mica, Teflon, chalk, soap stone
Solid lubricants are generally used in the
following cases:
• When heavy machinery is to be operated at high speed and moderate load
or at very high load and low speed.
• When the machine parts are not easily accessible.
• When machines are at high working temperature and pressure.
• They are used in the form of powder or a suspension in water or oil.
