Single Jersey Circular Knitting Machine

Introduction
Due to the ever increasing demand for quality
products a high quality standard is important
for the circular weft knitting industry. The high
quality standard can be guaranteed by careful
planning, incorporating appropriate quality
assurance ensure and by accurate allocation of
incurred overheads to their origins. Industrial analyses indicate
that product quality can be improved, and defect cost
minimized, by real-time monitoring of the circular knitting
process. The important function of such a concept lies not only
in detecting process interference but also in identifying their
sources and ensuring their quick and cost effective elimination.
What is knitting ???

Knitting is the process of manufacturing fabric by transforming

continuous strands of yarn into a series of interlocking loops, each row
of such loops hanging from the one immediately preceding it. The basic
element of knit fabric structure is the loop intermeshed with the loop
adjacent to it on both sides and above and below it.

Single Jersey or Plain fabric
• A fabric in which the knitted loops are the same sort and meshed in the same manner
• Single jersey is the simplest to knit and it can be produced either on circular or flat machines by means of
one set of needles which draw their loops to only one side of the fabric.
• The fabric has one appearance on the face side and a different one on the reverse. The side on which the
straight parts of the stitches appear in V formation is called the face side ( Technical Face) and the reverse
side ( Technical Back ) has twin rows of opposed semi circles.
Single Jersey Machines:

Single Jersey machines are equipped with a single

“cylinder”, about 30 inch diameter, of needles that
produce plain fabrics (single thickness).Wool
production on single jersey machines tends to be
limited to 20 gauge or coarser, as these gauges can
use two-fold wool yarns which will give spirally-
free fabrics. An additional inherent feature of wool
single jersey fabrics is that the fabric edges tend to
curl inwards. This is not a problem whilst the fabric
is in tubular form but once cut open can become so
if the fabric is not finished correctly.
Properties Of Single Jersey

* Simplest knit structure.

* Face side smooth and sheen.
* Back side rough and dull.
* Lighter fabric.
* Economical.
* Easily ravels at both the ends.
* Highly extensible in length and width.
* The fabric curls towards the face at the top and bottom and towards the back at the
sides.
* Laddering is very common in these fabrics.
* Knitted loops in plain knit fabrics tend to distort easily under tension which helps to
give a form fitting and comfort due to property of elastic.
Features of Single Jersey Circular Knitting Machine :
Various key features of single jersey circular knitting machine :
Single jersey fabric is produced by the plain circular  latch
needle machine. One set of latch needle is used in single jersey
circular knitting machine. Latch needle, cylinder and sinker ring
revolve through the stationary knitting cam systems. Stationary yarn
feeders are situated at regular intervals around the circumferences of
the cylinder. Yarn is supplied from cones, placed either on an integral
overhead bobbin stand or on a free standing creel through tensioners,
stops motions and guide eyes down to the yarn feeder guides. The
fabric is in tubular form here which is drawn downwards from inside
the needle cylinder by tension rollers and is wound onto the fabric
batching roller of the winding down frame. The winding down
mechanism revolves in rack over with the fabric tube. As the sinker
cam plate is mounted outside on the needle circle, the center of the
cylinder is open and the machine is referred to an open top or sinker
top machine.

Needle Specifications
For example: Vota 78.60 G.02

 The capital letter at the beginning of the word ( “V”), identifies the number of butts and the
type of tail.
 The first part (78 in the example) indicates the whole length rounded off to the mm
 The second (.60 in the example) part indicates the gauge of the needle in hundredths of mm
(width of the needle).
 The first capital letter indicates the needle manufacturer (G for Groz-Beckert).
 The next number is used to distinguish a specific needle among all the needles produced by
the same manufacturer.
 For other needles, the latch fixing method is indicated by a “0” before the last number.
 A “0” indicates that the latch has been fixed with a standard pressed pin; no “0” means that
the latch has been fixed with a screw pin.
The sinker

The sinker is the second primary knitting element (the needle being the
first). It is a thin metal plate with an individual or a collective action
operating approximately at right angles from the hook side of the needle
bed, between adjacent needles.

Functions:
It may perform one or more of the following functions, dependent upon the
machine’s knitting action and consequent sinker shape and movement:
 Loop formation
 Holding-down
 Knocking-over
The cam
Cam is the second primary knitting element. The cams are the
mechanical devices which convert the rotary machine drive into
suitable reciprocating action for the needles or other elements.
Because all needles have a reciprocating action either serially or
seriatim, except on the bearded needle sinker wheel and loop
wheel frames where the fixed needle circle merely revolves. The
cams are carefully profiled to produce precisely-timed movement
and dwell periods and are of two types:

i. Engineering cams.
ii. Knitting cams.

b) Tuck cam
