INTRODUCTION
• We need two electrodes made from different conducting materials, an electrolyte, and an electricity supply
• one of the electrodes is made from the metal we're trying to plate and the electrolyte is a solution of a salt of the same metal. So,
for example, if we're copper plating some brass, we need a copper electrode, a brass electrode, and a solution of a copper-based
compound such as copper sulfate solution
• We dip the two electrodes into the solution and connect them up into a circuit so the copper becomes the positive electrode (or
anode) and the brass becomes the negative electrode (or cathode)
• the copper sulfate solution splits into ions (atoms with too few or too many electrons). Copper ions (which are positively
charged) are attracted to the negatively charged brass electrode and slowly deposit on it—producing a thin later of copper plate.
Meanwhile, sulfate ions (which are negatively charged) arrive at the positively charged copper anode, releasing electrons that
move through the battery toward the negative, brass electrode.
APPLICATIONS OF ELECTROPLATING
• Aesthetics : using electroplating a thin layer of valuable metals can be coated on a cheaper
metal which can give an attractive look to the final product at a lower cost.used for jewelry.
• Automobile : Electroplating is used on car parts with a thin layer of chromium for a smooth
texture and appearance. Electroplating is also used on cars to prevent rust
• Electricity : gold and silver are elctroplated to cheaper material for wire
• Protection from radiation
• Reducing friction
INSTRUMENTS USED IN ELECTROPLATING
1. Jewelry : A thin layer of valueable metals like gold or silver can be plated on a cheaper metal which
can give a luxurious look but way cheaper price
2. Electricity : valuable metals like silver or gold can be coated to cheaper metal to make wire material
3. Reducing Friction : Electroplating certain metals like nickel to another can reduce friction to prevent
wear
4. Protecting From Radiation : Electroplating metals that are not resistant against radiation with metals
that are resistant. Platings of gold, silver, or copper helps protect internal electronics from radiations
such as infrared or UV
ASSIGNTMENT 3 NUMBER 3
• What is the fundamental principle in electroplating? Can you also explain instrumentation
required to perform the experiment? And how it works?
Electroplating process uses the principles of electrolysis
The process needs two electrodes made from different conducting materials, for example
if we want to electroplate gold on other material for jewelry. The gold plating is
connected to the anode (+ve charged electrode) of the circuit and the jewellery is kept at
the cathode (-ve charged electrode). Both are kept immersed in a highly developed
electrolytic bat (solution). At this stage, a DC current is supplied to the anode that
oxidizes the gold atoms and dissolves them into the solution.
Equipments used : External DC power supply, electroplating solution, electrolyzer constituted by
plating workpiece and anode
Electroplating is an electrochemical process and a redox process. For example : nickel plating,
cathode(-) is the part to be plated, and the anode(+) is pure nickel plate, the reactions are :
Cathode (plating) : Ni2++ 2e Ni(s) (main reaction )
