HOW HEAT IS BEING
TRANSFERRED?

• Conduction is simply the flow of

heat following physical contact
• Convection is heat transfer due to
motion of a fluid (liquid or gas).
• Radiation is heat transferred by
electromagnetic waves. These
electromagnetic waves have
energy, and when absorbed by
the receiving object, they heat
the object up
WHAT IS A THERMOS? 
 The technical name of a thermos is a vacuum flask
 A vacuum flask is a bit like a super-insulated jug.
 A vacuum flask is nothing but a bottle inside a bottle
separated by a vacuum.
 There is nothing in contact with the bottle except the part
that holds the inside bottle in place.
  have an inner chamber and an outer plastic or metal case
separated by two layers of glass with a vacuum in between.
 The glass is usually lined with a reflective metal layer.
Unbreakable flasks do away with the glass.
 Instead, they have two layers of stainless steel with a vacuum
and a reflecting layer in between them.
 There's also a tight, screw-down stopper on the top.
HOW DOES IT WORKS? 
 The first way of loss of heat by conduction.
 The flask is made up of glass which is a bad conductor of heat so, the heat
cannot be escaped out by conduction.

 The second step is convection.

 in which the heat transfer to the surrounding through air medium.
 So, the flask is made with two walls of glass creating vacuum in between them.
 There is no air in between the walls of the flask.
 Hence, the transfer of heat is restricted by creating vacuum. So, no transfer of
heat is occur due to convection.

 The third and final way of heat transfer is Radiation.

 The heat can be lost in the form of radiation. To restrict this way of heat loss
the wall of the flask made silvering which stops the loss of heat by radiation.
 Finally, all three ways of transfer of heat restricted.
 It means the heat inside the flask cannot be lost in anyway keeping the
temperature of the water hot for ever
HOW TO ACCELERATE
COOLING PROCESS 
 Flasks also work for cold drinks.
 heat can't penetrate into a flask from outside.
 So, to accelerate your cooling process,
 Put your flask into the refrigerator.
 surround your drink with something that conducts
heat very well, like a wet paper towel.
 Why? because water conducts heat much better than
the air inside of a refrigerator.
Thermos fact  
~it keeps cool water cooler than hot
water hotter.
 Heat always flows from the hotter object to the colder object
 The rate of heat flow between two objects is bigger when the temperature difference between
them is bigger.
 When a hot liquid is contained, heat will flow from the liquid, out of the Thermos, and into the
room because the liquid is at a higher temperature than the room
 Water boils at 100 degrees C, so let’s estimate the temperature of your generic hot liquid to be
somewhere between 80 and 100 degrees C. Room temperature is approximately 25 degrees C,
which means that there is a difference of 55-75 degrees between the temperature of the hot
liquid and the temperature of the room
 When a cold liquid is contained in the Thermos, heat will  flow from the room into the Thermos.
Since water freezes at 0 degrees C, let’s estimate the temperature of your generic cold liquid to
be somewhere between 0 and 10 degrees C. Then the difference in temperature between the
cold liquid and the room is only 15-25 degrees; this is much less than the 55-75 degree difference
that we got with the hot liquid!
