History
• Begin from China – 2000 BCE
• Fan Lai’s book, “The Classic of Fish Culture” – 500BCE
• Travelled to French Indochina, Indonesia, Europe,
North America, New Zealand, Australia and many
more regions
Methods
• Natural breeding
Needs natural environment
Disadvantages:
• Seed not available when needed for many
species which leads to shortage of fingerling
for stocking followed by low fish production.
• Fish eggs and seeds are susceptible to attack by
insect larvae, water bugs and fish parasites.
• Difficulty in identifying the growth stages of
different fish species which causes desired fish
stocked with other species.
• Not an economical method as cost of
maintaining natural environment of fish and
worker cost is high.
Advantages: - no skills needed to perform
methods
• Semi natural breeding Hormone injection
Left in pond or tank for
spawning
Cons: results in low quality and
distinguishing the age of fish
from parent fish would be
difficult over time.
Pros: inexpensive and simple to
achieve good survival rate,
growth and health of fish.
methods
• Artificial breeding
Hormone induced
Cutting fish belly for to obtain milt from testis
Artificial Fertilization + incubation
Advantages: fish availability all year round, the seed can
be obtained out of natural environment, high rate of fry
survival & fish quality can be improved by hybridization.
Disadvantages: causes loss of the donor fish, highly
technical process which require labor & a very costly
method as proper housing, tanks, and other facilities.

biotechnological approach
