MAJOR LANDFORMS

DIFFERENT LANDFORMS OF THE WORLD

What are Land Forms ?
A landform is a feature on the Earth's surface.
Mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains are the four major types
of landforms. Minor landforms include buttes, canyons, valleys, and
basins. Tectonic plate movement under the Earth can create landforms.
Today we are going to present about :
• Mountains
• Plateaus
• Plains
• Some Facts
Mountains
A mountain is a large landform that rises above the surrounding land in
a limited area, usually in the form of peak. Mountains aquire one-fifth
of the total land area.
Types of Mountains are:
Block Mountains
Volcanic Mountains
Fold Mountains
Fold Mountains
Fold mountains occur when two plates collide. The less
dense continental crust "floats" on the denser mantle rocks beneath.
The continental crust is normally much thicker under mountains,
compared to lower lying areas.
Block Mountains
Block mountains are caused by faults in the crust: a seam where rocks
can move past each other. When rocks on one side of a fault rise
relative to the other, it can form a mountain.
Volcanic Mountains
Volcanoes are formed:
When a tectonic plate is pushed below another tectonic plate, at a mid-
ocean ridge or hotspot. At a depth of around 680 kilometres, melting
occurs in rock above the slab (due to the addition of water), and
forms magma that reaches the surface. When the magma reaches the
surface, it often builds a volcanic mountain.
Plains
Plains are large stretches of flat land, they can also be slightly hilly. Not
rising more than 200 metres above the mean sea level. plains are very
fertile lands because rivers deposit them with sand and silt.
Transportation is very easy in plains that is why plains are thickly
populated. Plains can be used for growing crop because of their fertile
soil and used for building homes because of the flat land.
Plateaus
A plateau is a flat, elevated landform that rises sharply above the
surrounding area on at least one side. Plateaus occur on
every continent and take up a third of the Earths land. They are one of
the four major landforms, along with mountains, plains, and hills.
Facts Extra facts
• The largest plain in the world is • Earth is literally being recycled
the West Siberian Plain. like so : Magma - crystallisation-
• The largest and highest plateau igneous rocks - erosion -
in the world is the Tibetan sedimentation - sedimentary
Plateau. rocks - tectonic burial-
metamorphic rocks - melting -
• Mountains are home to magma - crystallisation .......
approximately one-tenth of the
world’s people.
