    EVALUATION OF CRUDE DRUGS

     Drug evaluation may be define as the determination of identity, purity and


    quality of drug.
     Importance of evaluation of crude drug:-

    a.Determination of biochemical variation in the drug.


    b. Identification of deterioration due treatment and storage.
    METHODS OF DRUG EVALUATION

     The various methods are:-


    1. Orgenoleptic evaluation
    2. Microscopic evaluation
    3. Physical evaluation
    4. Chemical evaluation
    5. Analytical evaluation
    6. Biological evaluation
    PHYSICAL EVALUATION

     Moisture content
     Ash value
     Swelling index
     Extractive values
     Melting point
     Solubility
     Viscosity
    ASH VALUES

     The residue remaining after insineration is the ash content of the drug.
     It may be organic salts of carbonates, phosphates, potassium, calcium,
    magnesium.
     Ash value is a method to judge the purity of the drug.
    TYPES OF ASH VALUES

     Total ash value


     Acid insoluble ash value
     Sulphated ash value
     Water soluble ash value
    TOTAL ASH VALUE

     Useful for detecting low grade products.


     Useful for detecting excess of sandy.
     Usedul for detecting earthy matter with drug.
     Useful for detecting exhausted drug.

    *DETERMINATION:-
    Weigh accurately about 3gm of the powder drug

    Incinirate the drug by gradually increasing the heat until free from carbon and cool

    weigh the ash and calculate the % of the total ash with reference to air dried sample
    ACID INSOLUBLE ASH VALUE
     Use for the determination of earthy matter present on roots, rhizomes, and also on
    the leaves.
     Crude drug contain calcium oxalate crystals the amount may varies depending on
    the environmental condition.

    * DETERMINATION:-
    Boil the total ash obtaines as above for 5 minutes with 25 ml of dilute HCL

    Filter and collect the insoluble matter on ashless filter paper

    Wash the filter paper and ignite on tared crucible and cool

    Weigh the residue and calculate the acid insoluble ash


    SULPHATED ASH VALUE

     Used for the detection of low grade products


    WATER SOLUBLE ASH VALUE

     Used to detect either material exhausted by water or not
