Law of Reflection: Portia A. Egken

The document discusses the law of reflection and how it relates to focal length, object distance, and image distance and size. It states that the mirror equation is 1/f = 1/do + 1/di, where f is the focal length, do is the object distance, and di is the image distance. It also gives the magnification equation as Si/So = di/do, where Si is the image size and So is the object size. An example problem demonstrates how to use these equations to calculate the image distance and size given the focal length, object distance, and object size.

LAW OF REFLECTION
Mirror equation

1/f = 1/do + 1/di

f = focal length
do = distance of the object
di = distance of the image
Magnification equation

Si / So = di / do

Si = Size of the image

So = Size of the object
Focal length – is the distance between the lens and
the image sensor when the subject is in focus
Shorter focal length – wider the angle of view and
greater the area of capture
Mirror
Shorter focal length bends the ray more sharply
bringing them to focus in a shorter distance.
Negative focal length = diverge light
Positive focal length = converge light
Example
 A 4cm tall light bulb is placed a distance of 45.7 cm
from a CONCAVE mirror having a focal length of
15.2cm . Determine the image distance and image
size
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
1/(15.2 cm) = 1/(45.7 cm) + 1/di
0.0658 cm-1 = 0.0219 cm-1 + 1/di
0.0439 cm-1 = 1/di
di = 22.8 cm
Example
Si/ho = - di/do
Si /(4.0 cm) = - (22.8 cm)/(45.7 cm)

Si = - (4.0 cm) • (22.8 cm)/(45.7 cm)

Si = 1.99 cm
