Sound is produced by vibrations. When objects like vocal cords or a rubber band vibrate back and forth, they produce sound waves. Humans produce sound through vibrations of the vocal cords in the voice box. The vibrations travel through a medium like air or water to the ears. In the ears, the vibrations cause the eardrum to vibrate, sending signals through the inner ear to the brain where they are interpreted as sound.

How do you come to know that a period
is over?
How do you know that there is someone
at the door?
The Answer is Simple!
◦ We know that the period is over when we hear the sound of the bell ring.

◦ And we know that someone is at the door when we hear the sound of door
bell ring.
The Question arises?
◦ How is sound produced?

◦ How does it travel from one place to another?

◦ How do we hear sound?

How is Sound produced?
◦ Let us understand it this way. Take a rubber band and stretch it
between your Index finger and thumb and stretch it with your
other hand and release it.
◦ Will you observe any sound?
◦ The to and fro or back and forth motion of an object is called
vibration.
◦ When a tightly stretched band is plucked, it vibrates and
produces sound. When it stops vibrating, it does not produce
any sound.
◦ In some cases, Vibrations are easily visible to us. But in most
cases, it is very small that we cannot see them.
◦ Can you give more such examples where vibrations produces
sound?
But How Humans produce sound?
◦ Speak loudly for a while or sing a song, or buzz like a bee. Put
your hand on your throat. Do you feel any vibrations?
◦ Put your fingers on the throat and find a hard bump that seems
to move when you swallow. This part of the body is known as
the voice box or larynx. It is at the upper end of the wind pipe.
◦ Two vocal cords are stretched across the larynx in such a way
that it leaves a narrow slit between them for the passage of air.
◦ When the lungs force air through the slit, the vocal cords vibrate,
producing sound. Muscles attached to the vocal cords can make
the cords tight and loose.
◦ When the vocal cords are tight and thin the type of quality of
voice is different.
◦ But why do we sound different from each other?

◦ Because the size of the vocal cords varies in men,

women and children.

Now we learnt how the sound is produced? But

how does it travel from one place to another?
Propagation of Sound
◦ Now while I am teaching you, All of you can hear my
sound. But how does my sound travelling to you ?
◦ Let’s understand it this way : Take a metal glass
tumbler. Make sure it is dry. Place a cell phone in it.
Ask your friend to give a call on this cell phone.
◦ Now surround the rim of the tumbler with your
hands. Put your mouth on the opening between your
hands. Now start sucking the air out of the tumbler.
◦ Will the sound become fainter or stronger?
◦ Yes, the sound will become fainter but why? Does
the decreasing air in the tumbler have to do
something with the sound becoming fainter?
◦ Indeed, If you had been able to suck the air completely, the sound
would stop completely. Actually, sound needs a medium to travel.
Here in the above activity, can you tell me what was the medium
through which sound was travelling?

◦ Yes, air was the medium. If we suck out all the air completely, it is
said that there is vacuum in the vessel and you cannot hear any
sound because there is no medium left for sound to travel.

◦ Does sound travel through liquids also?

◦ What about solids? Can you give any example?

◦ So we learnt how is sound produced? How does sound travel

from one place to another. But how does we actually hear
the sound?
We hear sound through our ears
◦ The shape of the outer ear is like a funnel. When
the sound enters in it, it travels down a canal at the
end of which a thin membrane is stretched tightly. It
is called eardrum. It performs an important
function.
◦ The eardrum is like a stretched rubber sheet. Sound
vibrations make the eardrum vibrate. The eardrum
sends signals to the inner ear. From there, the signal
goes to the brain. That is how we hear.
