TWO MAJOR EVENTS HAPPENED IN 1872
THE MARTYRDOM
OF GOMBURZA
OVERVIEW
THE CAVITE MUTINY

These were the two major events in
1872. First was the 1872 Cavite Mutiny

and the other was the martyrdom of the

three martyr priests in the person’s of
Father Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora. They were popularly
known as the “GomBurZa.”
However, not all of us knew that there
were different accounts in reference to the
said event. It has two extant versions

Facing an outrageous injustice from Spaniards,
the Cavite Mutiny challenges us to imagine and
build a movement for human liberation. It
reminds us that freedom is a constant struggle.
Many Filipino heroes give their lives fighting for
freedom and their legacy has so much to teach us
about today’s human rights crises. That
realization is behind a need to fight for our rights
as Filipinos. It is our duty to resist violence and
The moral lesson in relation to the Cavite
Mutiny is that one must stand and fight for
his/her rights and privileges whether it is given or
not. It is good to fight for our rights, which
includes the right to freedom. But, it should not
create any harm to others. Nobody wants to be
enslaved. Every person on this planet has a right
to live its own life in its way within its own
country. Moreover, this awakens our sense of
