History of Sustainable
development
•The concept of sustainable development formed the basis of the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992

•Sustainable development was the solution to the problems of environmental degradation discussed by
the Brundtland Commission in the 1987 report Our Common Future.

•The report was to investigate the numerous concerns that had been raised in previous decades, namely,
that human activity was having severe and negative impacts on the planet.
What is development?
•There are many meanings that are attached to the idea of development. However, it is usually defined
as bringing about social change that allows people to achieve their human potential.

•It is indented to bring a positive change to the environment of a human being.

•Development also increases the size and pace of an economy of a country. More product and services
are produced in a country and humans enjoy a higher standard of living.
Sustainable development
Sustainable development is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Specifically, it is a way of
organizing society so that it can exist in the long term. The industrial revolution is connected to the rise
of the idea of sustainable development. From the second half of the 19th century, Western societies
started to discover that their economic and industrial activities had a significant impact on the
environment and the social balance. Several ecological and social crises took place in the world and
rose awareness that a more sustainable model was needed. It includes both economical and social
upbringings.
Sustainable Development Goals…
In 2015, United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable development goals with 169 targets to reach by 2030. The
goals and targets are universal, that means it applies to all countries around the world, not just poor
countries. Reaching the goals requires action on all fronts—governments, businesses, civil society, and
people everywhere all have a role to play.
Reasons to step up actions on
sustainable development goals
1. Poverty

2. Child Mortality

3. Child marriage

4. Energy

5. Disaster Management

6. Hunger
1) Poverty

While extreme poverty has been reduced considerably in the past decades, there are pockets in
the world where it still stubbornly persists. Extreme poverty in 2013 was a third of the 1990 value –
declining to only 11% of the world’s population. Despite this improvement, 783 million people still
live on less than $1.90 a day. More than half of the world’s extreme poor live in sub-Saharan Africa,
while about one-third live in Southern Asia.
2) Child Mortality

Worldwide, child mortality decreased substantially over the past several decades. Child deaths fell
by 47 percent from 2000 to 2016, which means more children are living and thriving. Still, the fact that
5.6 million children die each year – mostly of preventable causes – shows we have more work to do.
This is especially true when it comes to neonatal deaths, which have seen less progress
3) Child marriage

Gender inequality continues to threaten girls and women around the world. Women continue to be
underrepresented in the workforce and in political capitals, but one important area of improvement is
fewer girls are being married as child brides. This progress has largely been driven by the progress in
Southern Asia, where a girl’s risk of marrying in childhood has declined by over 40% since around
2000. Still, one girl married as a child is one too many.
4) Energy

Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy for all is one step closer. From 2000 to
2016, the proportion of the global population with access to electricity increased from 78% to 87%,
with the absolute number of people living without access to electricity dipping to just below 1 billion.
The challenge of 3 billion people cooking with polluting fuels and stoves is especially severe, causing
4 million deaths a year. Closing the gaps in access to sustainable energy is essential to sustainable
development – protecting health and the environment while opening up education and economic
opportunities.
5) Disaster management

Despite efforts to reduce the risks from disasters, economic losses in 2017 attributed to disasters
were estimated at over $300 billion. These are among the highest losses in past years owing to three
major hurricanes affecting the U.S. and the Caribbean. Climate change is contributing to more intense
extreme weather, and unfortunately the world’s poorest people are the most vulnerable to disasters.
6) Hunger

Global hunger is on the rise after a period of prolonged decline. Until recently, global hunger was
decreasing. Unfortunately, that trend has reversed as the number of undernourished people rose to 815
million in 2016. Conflict, drought, and disasters linked to climate change are among the factors
causing reversal in the long-term progress in fighting global hunger.
Decade of Sustainable
Development
The launch of the UN Decade of Education of Sustainable Development (2005–2014) started
a global movement to reorient education to address the challenges of sustainable
development.  Acknowledged by UN General Assembly Resolution and launched at the
UNESCO World Conference on ESD in 2014, it aims to scale-up actions and good practices.
UNESCO has a major role, along with its partners, in bringing about key achievements to
ensure the principles of EED are promoted through formal, non-formal and informal education.
Sub Groups
Sustainable development can be thought of in terms of three spheres, dimensions, domains or pillars,
i.e. the environment, the economy and society. The three-sphere framework was initially proposed by
the economist Rene Passet in 1979. It has also been worded as "economic, environmental and social"
or "ecology, economy and equity".
Environmental
Environmental sustainability concerns the natural environment and how it remains diverse and
productive. The natural resources are derived from the environment. Most of these recourses are
limited to us. Environmental sustainability requires society to design activities to meet human needs
while preserving the life support system of the planet. An unsustainable situation occurs when the total
resources of a nation are being used at a rate at which they can be replenished naturally.
Economic
It has been suggested that because of rural poverty and overpopulation, environmental resources
should be treated as important economic assets. Economic development has traditionally required GDP
growth. This model may be over with sustainable development. Sustainable development may involve
improvements in the quality of life for many but may necessitate a decrease in resource consumption.
Economists have presented alternatives, for example a 'steady-state economy', to address concerns over
the impacts of expanding human development on the planet.
Agriculture
Sustainable agriculture consists of environment friendly methods of farming that allow the production
of crops or livestock without damage to human or natural systems. It involves preventing adverse
effects to soil, water, biodiversity, surrounding or downstream resources—as well as to those working
or living on the farm or in neighboring areas. The concept of sustainable agriculture extends
intergenerationally, passing on a conserved or improved natural resource, biotic, and economic base
rather than one which has been depleted or polluted.
Energy
Sustainable energy is clean and can be used over a long period of time. Unlike fossil fuels and biofuels
that provide the bulk of the worlds energy, renewable energy sources like hydroelectric, solar and wind
energy produce far less pollution. Solar energy is commonly used on public parking meters, street
lights and the roof of buildings. Wind power has expanded quickly too. As renewable energy becomes
more common, fossil fuel infrastructures are replaced by renewables and we may begin to see
a Renewable energy transition, providing better social equity.
Technology
One of the core concepts in sustainable development is that technology can be used to assist people to
meet their developmental needs. Technology to meet these sustainable development needs is often
referred to as appropriate technology. Appropriate technology is often developed using open
source principles. This allows many of the plans of the technology can be freely found on the Internet.
Transportation
Transportation is a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. It is said that one-third of all gases
produced are due to transportation. Sustainable transport has many social and economic benefits that
can accelerate local sustainable development. Sustainable transport can help create jobs, improve
commuter safety through investment in bicycle lanes and pedestrian pathways, make access to
employment and social opportunities more affordable and efficient. It also offers a practical
opportunity to save people's time and household income.
Desired outcomes of sustainable
development
•Clean water and air

•Fertile soil and good food

•A livelihood and a healthy economy

•An optimum population size

•Halting global warming

•Safety from poverty and disease

•Social contact and a sense of community

Challenges to Sustainable
Development
1.Lack of financial resources to carry out and plan sustainable development

2.Sustainable development is often not possible in war-torn countries as there are other priorities on hand.

3.Natural occurrences, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, can pose a threat to sustainability as they can
shift the flow of water and destroy certain elements of infrastructure.

4.The governmental conflict between immediate profit and investment towards sustainable technologies.

5.Corruption

6.Lack of efforts at a municipal level

Conclusion

Owing to our rapidly growing population, in the future more resources will be needed in order to
accommodate for it and, unfortunately, the resources that we take benefit of now are not all renewable.
As the non renewable resources are depleting day after day, we have to look out for new renewable
resources for working and maintenance of our society. Sustainable development is the way for the
future….
