Simple loop generator

A generator with one single loop rotated for

only one turn is a simple loop generator.
• It consists of a rectangular coil of sides ABCD,
• a and b are two slip rings connected to the
shaft of the prime mover.
• The brushes 1 and 2 are connected to slip
rings a and b.
• When the coil rotates the slip rings also rotate
with the coil while the brushes 1 and 2 are
stationary in the brush rockers.
Basic generator

• Basic operation of the generator
– As the loop rotates, the magnetic flux through it changes with
time

– This induces an e.m.f and a current in the external circuit.

– The ends of the loop are connected to slip rings that rotate with
the loop.

– Connections to the external circuit are made by stationary

brushes in contact with the slip rings.

– It can be seen that the output of the generator is alternating after

– every half cycle as the conductors rotate.

– But the output of D.C. Generator is suppose to be unidirectional

and not alternating.
• In order to obtain unidirectional emf the slip rings
are replaced by split rings.
• The split rings are made into two segments a and b.
Initially assume that segment a is +ve and
b is –ve.
• Initially the segment a is connected to brush 1 and
segment b to brush 2 respectively.
• Now brush 1 is positive and brush 2 is negative.
• The split rings also rotate with the conductor but
brushes 1 and 2 remain stationary in the rockers.
• After half of the rotation since the coil interchanges
its position , split rings also interchange .
• After half of the rotation segment a is –ve and
connected to brush 2 and segment b is +ve
and connected to brush 1.
• It is seen that the output at the load is
unidirectional as brush 1 always receives +ve
voltage and brush 2 always receives –ve
voltage.
• These split rings are equal to no of armature
conductors and all the split rings put together
form the commutator segments.

• The output voltage always has the same polarity
• The current is a pulsating current
• To produce a steady current, many loops and
commutator around the axis of rotation are used
– The multiple outputs are superimposed and the output is
almost free of fluctuations
