Definition of American Poetry

During its early history, American was a series of


British Colonies on the Eastern coast of the present-
day United States. Therefore, its literary tradition
begans as linked to the broader tradition of English
literature.
The Characteristic of American Poetry
● American poetry began with a style and structure
similar to British poetry. As they start to gain a
national identity, however, American poets
started to create their own form, liberating
themselves from the British.
● Their poetry expressing about the nature, family
matters, meaning of life, etc.
● Ralph Waldo Emerson is know as the “pioneer” of
the American poetry in the 19th century.
