WHAT IS A
COMPUTER????
COMPUTERS

A computer
is a programmable machine designed to
sequentially and automatically carry out a
sequence of arithmetic or logical
operations.
The particular sequence of operations can be
changed readily, allowing the computer to
solve more than one kind of problem.
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

Hardware is the name given to the physical devices of the

computer.

Software refers to the programs written for the computer.

What is Computer Engineering????
Computer Engineering
 Computer engineering, also called computer
systems engineering, is a discipline that
integrates several fields of electrical engineering
and computer science required to develop
computer systems.
 Computer engineers usually have training in
electronic engineering, software design, and
hardware-software integration instead of only
software engineering or electronic engineering.
USED OF COMPUTER
MECHATRONICS

 writing software and  microcontrollers,

 Designing analog sensors
 Designing mixed signal circuit boards
 Designing operating systems.
 Computer engineers are also suited for robotics
research, which relies heavily on using digital systems to
control and monitor electrical systems like motors,
communications, and sensors.
MECHANICAL CAD

 Mehcanical CAD is the combination of

Mechanical & Computer Engineering.

WHAT IS ELECTRONIC
ENGINEERING ?

Electronic Engineering is a
professional engineering that
deals with the study and
application of electricity,
electronics and electromagnetism.
 SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING
• Power System
• Control System
• Electronics
• Communication
• Electromagnetics
• Computer System
• Signal Processing
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

1. Power Systems
These systems convert energy in electrical
form and transmit energy over long distances, distribute
energy to dwellings and industrial complexes.
These systems are composed of generators,
transformers, distribution lines, motors and other elements.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING

2. Control Systems
These systems gather
information with sensors and use electrical
energy to control physical process.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING
3. Electronics
Electronics is the study and application of materials, devices,
and circuits used in amplifying and switching electrical signals.

 The most important electronic devices are transistors of various

kinds.

 In 1947, Transistor was invented in Bell labs in the USA.

 It was as tall as the face of wristwatch.
 In November 2001, another Bell lab team has built a transistor
from a single Molecule - small enough to fit about 10 million
transistors on the head of a pin.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING

4. Communication Systems
Information is transport in electrical form.
Cellular telephones, radio, satellite television and
the internet are examples of communication
systems.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING

5. Computer Systems

Process and storage of information is in digital

form. Computer is an essential electronic
equipment in the lives of people at the developed
modern world.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING

6. Electromagnetics

Electromagnetics is the study and application

of electrical and magnetic fields. Cellular
telephones and television antenna and
magnetron (a device in the oven) are examples of
electromagnetic devices.
SUBDIVISIONS OF ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING

7. Signal Processing

Signal Processing is concerned with

information-bearing electrical signal.The
objective is to extract useful information from
electrical signals derived from sensors.
Application are machine vision and robotics.
OVERVIEW

 Electrical Engineers design systems that have two

main objectives:

1. To generate, distribute, store and convert energy

between various forms.

2. To gather, store, process, transport and present

information.
CONTROL ENGINEERING

- PRASHANT DHIMAN
WHAT IS CONTROL
ENGINEERING ?

Control Engineering is an engineering that applies

to control theory to design system with predictable

behaviors.

The practice uses sensors to measure the output

performance of the device being controlled

TYPES OF CONTROL THEORY
There are two major divisions in control theory, namely, classical and
modern.

1)Classical control theory :

The scope of classical control theory is limited to
single-input and single-output (SISO) system design. In radio it is the use
of only one antenna both in the transmitter and receiver.

2) modern control theory :

Modern control theory deal with multi-input and multi-
output (MIMO) systems.MIMO technology has attracted attention in
wireless communications.
WHAT ARE SENSORS?

 A sensor is a device that measures a physical

quantity and converts it into a signal which can
be read by an observer or by an instrument. For
example, a mercury-in-glass thermometer.
APPLICATION OF

SENSORS :
Sensors are used in everyday objects such as touch-sensitive
buttons and lamps which dim or brighten by touching the
base. There are also innumerable applications for sensors of
which most people are never aware.
 Applications include cars, machines, aerospace, medicine,
manufacturing and robotics.
 Sensors that measure very small changes must have very high
sensitivities.
APPLICATION OF CONTROL
ENGINEERING INCLUDES:
Aircraft flight control system

Director (military)

Fire-control system

Guidance, Navigation and Control

Intelligent Flight Control System
