FREQUENCY A modernized efficient

way of filtering in
SELECTIVE SURFACE Microwave Field
WHAT IS FSS
The frequency selective surface (FSS) structure is an array of
periodically arranged metallic patches on a dielectric substrate or
slots in the metallic screen, which behaves as a spatial filter to the
electromagnetic waves and offer selectivity in frequency, angle-of-
incidence (AOI) and polarization of the incident waves
CLASSIFICATION OF FSS
High-pass FSS
Low-ass FSS
Band pass FSS (Slot type FSS)
Band stop FSS (Patch type FSS)
USE OF FSS
Radomes
Microwave ovens
Satellite Communication
Multi-Frequency Reflectors
Beam Control Arrays
FSS as reactive impedance surfaces.
FSS are used in design of Artificial Magnetic Conductors (AMC) and
EM Band Gap (EBG) materials etc.
PATCH TYPE FSS
In patch type FSS ,the base of the FSS is made of di-electric . Then a metal
patch is placed above it.

Patch type slot array

APERTURE TYPE FSS
Aperture type is made in a opposite process of patch type FSS.
Here a dielectric aperture is put on a metallic base by etching and
photo lithography process.

There are various factors, which govern the performance of the FSS
structures, out of which the critical factors are:
A) Shape and parameters of element,
B) Dielectric substrate parameters,
C) AOIs and polarizations of the incidence wave,
D) Element conductivity and
E) Periodicity of FSS.

DESIGN OF A COMPACT, TETRA-BAND
FREQUENCY SELECTIVE SURFACE FOR
COMMUNICATION PURPOSE
ABSTRACT:

This project presents Simulated investigation on a

compact, multi band Frequency Selective Surface using
simple geometry. It’s experimentally found that three bands
of resonating frequencies 2.62GHz, 6.35 GHz, and 9.4GHz
are exhibited within the operating frequency band of the
proposed FSS. Also 81% compactness is obtained.
Simulation of the proposed design is done using ANSOFT
Designer® software. Measured and simulated results are in
close parity. The designed FSS operates in S, C and X
bands so it can be used for long distance radio
telecommunication, satellite communication, radar,
terrestrial broad band, space communication etc.
DESIGN OF FSS:
The FSS structure consists of
two dimensional arrays of
patches. The arrays of metallic
patches are aligned on the top
of a FR4 Epoxy substrate of
dielectric constant 4.4 and
thickness 1.6mm in the
conventional FSS structure as
shown in fig.1. Each patch size
is 16mm X 16 mm as shown in
fig 1. Periodicity is taken 18
mm X 18 mm for constructing
the array of patches. Reference Patch
Now we design the
modified FSS array by
etching out four gradually
90 degree shifted hybrid
shaped slots from the
square patch element as
shown in fig 2. Width of
each line of
interconnection is 1mm.
First Modified Design
The design in fig. 2 is
modified again which
denotes a hybrid loop to
further enhance the
compactness and
bandwidth. The modified
design is given in fig. 3.

Final Design
ANALYZED RESULT:
Computed transmission characteristics for reference patch [Fig.1]
using Ansoft Designer® is plotted in Fig.5, which shows that the
FSS resonates at 14GHz while considering the first frequency band.

Fig.4: Transmission characteristics of reference patch

Here resonating frequency is 6.75GHz, percentage
bandwidth=46% and compactness=51.78%. The
transmission characteristics for the second modified design
are shown in fig.6.

Fig.5: Transmission characteristics of the first modified design

Computed transmission characteristics for proposed FSS [Fig.2] using Ansoft is
plotted in Fig.6, which shows that the FSS resonates at 2.62GHz while
considering the first frequency band. Before designing the FSS with proposed
grid, the first resonating frequency is obtained at 14GHz [Fig.5]. To obtain the
resonating frequency at 2.62 GHz required the area of the patch is 1368mm2
approximately. The area of the reference patch is 256mm2 approximately. So
the compactness of [(1368-256)/1368]*100% =81.34% has been achieved with
the help of this proposed design.
