    OBJECTIVES
    At the end of the discussion, the learners can:

    • discuss the different elements of cooperative


    learning with the use of computer; and
    • compare the advantages and disadvantages
    of coopertive learning with the use of computer.
    • Singapore sets global pace for student-centered
    • 2:1 (2 pupils with one computer) ratio
    • Reality dictates that school face the fact
    • Each classroom in public schools may not be equipped
    with appropriate number of computers.

    What is Cooperative
    Learning?
    Cooperative learning is learning by small
    groups of students who work together in a
    common learning task. It is often called Group
    Learning.

    1. A COMMON GOAL

    A group of people who


    have joined together
    because they have similar
    interests or aims.

    Ex. Club, Organization


    2. INTERDEPENDENCE

    In a relationship,
    interdependence is the
    degree to which members
    of the group are manually
    dependent on the others.

    Ex. Interdependence of
    SSG
    3. INTERACTION

    A kind of action that occurs


    as two or more objects affects
    one another.

    Ex. Two people talking


    4. INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY
    A structural element in collaboration is
    pivotal to prevent and lower the likelihood of
    free riders or social loafing. Individual
    accountability is the belief that everyone will
    be accountable for her/his performance and
    learning

    Ex. Logistics is accountable for booking


    5. SOCIAL SKILLS

    Any skill facilitating interaction


    and communication with others.
    The process of learning, these
    skills is called socialization.

    Ex: Leadership
    Therefore not every group work is cooperative
    learning since students working on their work
    sheets physically sat around a table may be
    working together without these features of
    cooperative learning.
    Advantages of Cooperative Learning

    In addition, there are studies which show that


    cooperative learning enhances:

    • personal and social development;


    • self-esteem;
    • social relations between racially and culturally;
    • enhancing the moderation of ideas and content;
    • facilitating learning from experience; and
    • gaining insights into group processes and group
    dynamics
    Disadvantages of Cooperative Learning

    • students resistance to group learning


    • students negative attitude
    • depending on individuals motivation and
    interest
    • one bright students doing the most
    • students becoming impatient with others
    • students in the group are having conversations
    • can create confusion in the classroom
    Cooperative Learning and the Computer
    Based on a study conducted, researchers agree that
    the computer:
    • natural learning vehicle for cooperative learning
    • work with the students in a group
    • give option to work individually or in a group
    • poster positive social behavior
    • display monitor just like a television
    • fairly natural learning vehicle for cooperative
    learning
    COMPONENTS OF COOPERATIVE
    LEARNING

    Educators are still wary about of the


    computer’s role in cooperative learning. Thus they
    pose the position that the use of computers do not
    automatically result in cooperative learning. In that
    case, therefore, assign the teacher several task in
    order to ensure collaborative learning. These are:
    • assigning students to mixed-ability teams;

    • establishing positive interdependence;

    • teaching cooperative social skills;

    • insuring individual accountability, and

    • helping group process information


    These are in addition to assigning a common
    work goal in which each member of the group will
    realize that their group will not succeed unless
    everyone contributes to the groups success. It is
    also important for the teacher to limit learning
    group clusters (Six is the ideal number in a group)
    so that there can be closer involvement in thinking
    and learning.
