Parts
(found at Fry’s and Radio Shack)

• Altoids Tin (cinnamon looks the best)………....…~$2

• Batteries (6 AAA Rechargeable)……………….....~$15
• Battery holders (AAA 3 pairs)…………………….~$.70 (x3)
• 1Voltage Regulator (5 volts)……………………....~$4
• USB female connector……………………………~$5
• One on/off switch (small).........................................~$2
• 1 ft of regular wire....................................................scavenge
Tools
• Dremel (drilling/cutting tool)
• Soldering Iron + Solder
• Glue Gun
• Wire stripper
How it works
• 6 batteries, each carrying 1.2 volts, are linked together to make 7.2
volts worth of current (6 x 1.2)
• A voltage regulator lowers it back to 5 volts for outputting through the
USB connector to charge ipods and cell phones.
• The reason a voltage regulator is needed (instead of just using 4
batteries and jumping to 4.8 volts (works too) is the lack of efficiency
in that model. Each battery supplies 700-900 milliamp (mAh) of
power. The more mAh of power, the longer the battery lasts.
• Batteries “die” when the voltage is too low for the device to function.
By inputting higher voltage into the regulator, you decrease the rapid
ascent in voltage that you find by using resistors and diodes.

Note: There should be a circuit breaker
AKA switch to keep the batteries from
being drained by the voltage regulator.

The Other stuff
• just grab an lm7805 from your local store and
wire it up.  connect the positive battery
terminal to the 7805 input pin, the positive
usb pin to the 7805 output pin, and connect
the negative battery terminal and the usb
ground pin to the 7805 ground pin.
• which is which?  if you hold the 7805 with
the text facing you and the pins downward,
the pins from left to right are: input, ground,
output.  it looks like this:

• for the female usb connector, look down
into the end of the connector so that it is
oriented like so:
• pin 1 is the positive (5v) terminal (which
goes to the output of the 7805) and pin 4 is
ground (which goes to the 7805 ground pin).
Three Battery Holders and 6 AAA Batteries

Output:
7.2 Volts
(1.2v x6)

Negative

Positive

Both lead to the voltage regulator.
