Flying Windmill

Flying windmills are wind turbines that float in the air tethered to the ground, allowing them to harness stronger winds at higher altitudes. They have several advantages over traditional wind turbines such as lower cost, requiring less land, and producing energy at a lower cost per kWh. However, they also have some disadvantages like higher initial costs and needing to be lowered during very strong winds. Potential applications include providing off-grid power and rapid deployment in disaster relief situations.

Flying windmill

By:- N.HARSHITHA
 In this modern era, there are many sources of energy used to
generate an enormous amount of energy, but they are not
environmental friendly. Flying windmill has the potential to evolve
ABSTRACT as the fundamental cornerstone of sustainable electricity generation.
This research paper will discuss how flying windmills are better
than conventional energy sources and discuss their design and
economic feasibility, making it better than others.
 Energy is one of the essential building blocks in human
development and, as such, acts as a critical factor in determining
the economic development of all countries. To meet the demands of
a developing nation, the Indian energy sector has witnessed rapid
growth. Areas like resource exploration and exploitation, capacity
additions, and energy sector reforms have been revolutionized.
INTRODUCTI However, resource augmentation and development in energy supply
have failed to meet the ever-increasing demands exerted by the
ON multiplying population, rapid urbanization, and progressing
economy. Hence, severe energy shortages continue to plague India,
forcing it to rely heavily on imports, and flying windmills are a
solution to it.
 Flying windmills result from small modifications in the
conventional windmill that can produce a greater amount of energy
and save a lot of money in the energy sector.
 A flying windmill is very similar to that of a hot air
balloon but filled with helium gas instead, which helps the
rotor and generator floating in the air, and tied with the
help of a tether and replace those conventional, heavy and
costly pillars made up of concrete and iron. Wind energy
is a renewable energy source, and due to the higher
expenditure one has to bear, conventional windmills
cannot dominate in the power sector. Therefore, flying
windmills are better alternatives to conventional power
sources due to their low cost. Wind speed increase with
the increase in altitude and is consistent at higher
altitudes`
 Conventional windmill involves high upfront capital investment:- A
lot has been done to bring down the cost of installing turbines; the
overall costs, however, remain on the higher side. This involves
erecting a sample turbine to gauge the wind speeds over a stipulated
PROBLEMS period. If the location is ideal, the wind turbine will be
manufactured and transported to the site and set up on a strong
WITH THE foundation. The entire process adds up to the cost of setting up a
CONVENTIONAL wind turbine.

WINDMILL  Installation can take up a significant portion of land:- The best

location of wind turbines can be the most fertile land where farming
is practiced. The installation of wind turbines would take away
land that has been the bedrock of agricultural activities for many
years.
 Conventional windmills are prone to noise disturbances:- The most hated
disadvantage of wind turbines is the noise they produce. The sound that is
produced by one turbine can be perceived even from far distances.
Combine many turbines, and the noise becomes unbearable. This explains
the strong public objections to wind turbine installations in most areas.
 It is a windmill similar to a conventional one in its
working principle but here the rotor and generator will
be floating in air just like a hot air balloon. The
generator will be enclosed in an inflatable structure and
this structure is held by a Tether and tied to the ground.
Canadian engineer Fred Ferguson, specialized in
WHAT ARE airships, proposed an innovative system called as
FLYING WIND Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS). Magenn’s design is
MILLS radically different from other windmills on the market it
would not use propeller blades. Instead, it would be a
helium blimp, with Savories-style scoops causing it to
rotate around motors at the attachment-points to its
tether.
 The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) is the next generation of
wind turbines with cost and performance advantages over existing
systems. MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that
rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating
electrical energy. Helium sustains the Magenn Air Rotor System,
which ascends to an altitude as selected by the operator for the
best winds. Its rotation also generates the “Magnus” effect. This
aerodynamic phenomenon provides additional lift, keeps the
LIFTING MARS device stabilized, positions MARS within a very controlled
MECHANISM and restricted location, and finally, causes MARS to pull up
overhead to maximize altitude rather than drift downwind on its
tether.
• Helium is not the only thing that keeps the object aloft. Combined with its
shape, the spinning generates lift using what is called the Magnus effect,
which also tends to keep the craft overhead on its tether, rather than drifting
downwind. The bigger the MARS unit, the easier it is to build heavier stronger
structures, envelopes, and generators. As an example, the largest MARS units
planned (100' x 300') will have tens of tons of buoyant (helium) lift. This is well
in excess of the overall Air Rotor system weight.
Arrangement
of MARS
 As the rotor of the windmill rotates due to high velocity wind it
produces very high torque.. There is a step-up gear box which
connects the low-speed shaft to the high-speed shaft and
increases the rotational speeds from about 30 to 60 rotations per
How does it minute (rpm) to about 1200 to 1500 rpm. The electrical energy
work? thus produced is transferred down the tether for consumption, or
to a set of batteries or the power grid.

do not require cranes or special roads for

efforts (ex. Katrina, Tsunami) and military applications.
