Functional Structure of the HLR9820V9

The HLR9820 consists of the SAU, HDU, SMU, and BAM from the
aspect of function.
 SAU ( Signaling Access Unit )

 HDU ( HLR Database Unit )

 SMU ( Subscriber Management Unit )

 BAM ( Back Administration Module )

The four functional modules communicate with each other through

TCP/IP.

SAU Introduction

 The SAU accesses and MAP processes the signaling messages.

 The SAU implements the following functions:

 Accessing the IP network, ATM 2M signaling network, or SS7 signaling network

 Receiving the information sent by other functional entities to the

HLR9820.Processes signaling under MAP layer.

 Transfers MAP signaling to HDU. Sending the received information to the HDU.
Sending the information of the HDU to other functional entities
 The function is implemented by the OSTA1.0 board and the OSTA 1.0 subrack.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 12

HDU Introduction

 The HDU is the core database of the HLR9820. HDU has the
following functions:
 Stores the system configuration data, including the local HLR
number, template data, number analysis data, and MAP
service switch configuration data.
 Stores the subscriber data, including subscriber identification
data, authentication data, mobility dynamic data
 Processes the map services, including the authentication,
location update, sending of the routing information, SMS, and
data subscription service through a mobile terminal.
 The functions are implemented by the DMU, DSU, SCU, DRU in
the OSTA 2.0 subrack and the disk array.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 13

HDU Introduction

HDU comprises 5 functional modules :

 SCF ( Service Control Function ) module

 SMF ( Subscriber Management Function) module

 DRU ( Data Routing Unit ) module

 DSU ( Data Service Unit ) module

 DBMS ( Database Management System ) module

SMU Introduction

The SMU manages the global data and the subscriber data in the
HLR9820.

 Server provides interface to SMU client. SMU client operates

Subscriber’s data through UI interface;
 Provides opened interface to BOSS. To meet the requirements of
different operation modes on the subscriber data from clients;
 The function of SMU is implemented by the SMU or the BSU in
the OSTA 2.0 subrack.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 15

BAM Introduction
The BAM implements the following functions:
 Transferring the O&M commands from the LMTs (at both the near end and the
far end) to the SAU, HDU, or SMU
 Transferring the command responses from the SAU, HDU, or SMU to the
corresponding LMTs
 Storing and transferring the alarm information and the performance
measurement information
 Accessing the NMS

 Providing the NTP function, obtaining the accurate time through time
synchronization with the NTP server, and providing NTP time synchronization
for the HLR9820
The BAM functions are implemented by the BAMs or the BSUs in the OSTA
2.0 subrack. Either two BAMs or two BSUs work in active/standby mode.

Networking Solution

The internal networking of the HLR9820 adopts the dual-network and

dual-plane system architecture. Any single point failure cannot affect
normal system running. The internal network is separated from the
external network. This ensures the system security. The internal
networking of the HLR9820 is divided into two modes:
 Integration of data nodes and service nodes

 Separation of data nodes and service nodes

 Service nodes include the SAU, SCF, and BAM. They access and
process signaling.
 Data nodes include the SMF, SMU, BAM, DRU, DSU, DBMS, and risk
array. They store and manage the subscriber data.

HLR9820V9 Networking Solution

HLR9820V9 hardware system configuration solution:

 OSTA1.0 platform + OSTA2.0 platform solution

The SAU function is implemented by the OSTA1.0 hardware

platform, and HDU, BAM and SMU function are implemented by
the OSTA2.0 hardware platform in the HLR9820V9.
