We are given 5 question in this assessment.
And now, we will show you how to solve for each of these question.

—let’s get started ! ( ᐛ )‫و‬

Question 1
a) The English alphabet has five vowels and 21 consonants. What is the maximum
number of words that can be formed from the alphabet with two different vowels
and two different consonants?

b) All the letters of the word “ALTRUISM” are each written on a card and the cards
are then shuffled and placed in a line.
i. In how many ways can the cards be arranged?
ii. Three letters are chosen at random. Calculate the probability that at most two
letters chosen are consonants.
SOLUTION

21consonants –r=2c
∴ nCr = 21C2 x 5C2
n=26 = 210 x 10
= 2100
5 vowels –r=2v
SOLUTION

A L T R U I S M n=8

A-1
L-1
T-1
∴ 8! = 40320
R-1
U-1
I-1
S-1
M-1
SOLUTION

n=8
r=3 , ≥2 consonants; 0,1,2 ∴

(3C3 x 5C0) + (3C2 x 5C1) + (3C1 x 5C2)

v=3; r=3 r=2 r=1 = 1 + 15 + 30
n=9 = 46
c=5; r=0 r=1 r=2
Question 2
In a recent survey conducted by research assistants, 89 male employees were surveyed and classified
according to their position in the factory and their preferences on online games. The results of the
survey are shown in a table below.

If an employee is selescted a randowm, find these probabilities.

a) The employee is an operator and he prefers to play PUBG.

b) The employee prefers Clash of Clans or he is an operator.
c) Given that the employee is a technician, find the probability that he prefers to play Mobile Legends.

P(C) = 42/89
P(O) = 50/89

P(C ∩ O) = (42/89) x (50/89)

= 0.265

∴ P(C ∪ O) = (42/89) + (50/89) – (0.265)

= 0.769
SOLUTION

(M)

P(T | M) = P(T∩M)
P(M)

P(T∩M) = (39/89) x (24/89)

= 0.118
P(M) = (18/89) + (6/89)
= 0.270

∴ P(T | M) = 0.118/0.270
= 0.437
Question 3
A hospital has developed a test to discover whether newborn babies have a certain type
of mental disorder. From the past records, doctors knew the probability that a baby has
this disorder is 0.003. If the baby does have disorder, the test will be positive 98% of
the time. If a baby does not have the disorder, the test will be negative 99% of the time.
A newborn baby is selected at random.

a) Draw a tree diagram for the above situation.

b) Calculate the probability that the test is positive.
c) Assuming that the test on a newborn baby is positive, what is the probability that the
baby actually has the disorder?
SOLUTION

P 0.98
D ;info
3 0.02
0. 00N
D –Have disorder
Newborn D’ –Doesn’t have disorder
P –Positive
0.9
97P 0. 0 1 N –Negative
D’
N 0.99
SOLUTION

P(P) = P(D ∩ P) + P(D’ ∩ P)

= (0.003 x 0.98) + (0.997 X 0.01)
= 0.00294 + 0.00997
= 0.01291
SOLUTION

P(D | P) = P(D∩P)
P(P)

P(D∩P) = 0.003 x 0.98

= 0.00294
P(P) = (0.003 x 0.98) + (0.997 x 0.001)
= 0.01291

∴ P(D | P) = 0.00294/0.01291
= 0.2277
Question 4
A biased die with five faces is rolled. The discrete random variable Y represents the
score which is uppermost. The probability distribution of random variable Y is shown in
the table below.

a) Show that the value of k=1/5

b) Calculate mean and standards deviation of random variable Y.
c) Find the cumulative distribution function of random variable Y. Hence, evaluate
P(Y≤3).
SOLUTION

Σf(y) = 1

∴ k+k+2k+(1/10)+(1/10) = 1
4k+(1/5) = 1
4k = 4/5
k = 1/5
mean:

SOLUTION variance:

S.D:

Y 1 2 3 4 5
f(y) 1/10 1/10 2/5 1/5 1/5

Mean:
E(Y) = (1)(1/10) + (2)(1/10) + (3)(2/5) + (4)(1/5) + (5)(1/5)
= 1/10 + 1/5 + 6/5 + 4/5 +1
= 3.3

Standard deviation:
E(Y²) = (1²)(1/10) + (2²)(1/10) + (3²)(2/5) + (4²)(1/5) + (5²)(1/5)
= 1/10 + 2/5 + 18/5 + 16/5 + 5
= 12.3
V(Y) = E(Y²) – [E(Y)]²
= 12.3 – (3.3)²
= 1.41
∴ SD = √1.41
= 1.19
SOLUTION

{
1/10 ; 1 ≤ y ≤ 2
1/5 ; 2 ≤ y ≤ 3
Y 1 2 3 4 5 F(y) 3/5 ; 3 ≤ y ≤ 4

f(y) 1/10 1/10 2/5 1/5 1/5 1 ;y≥5
F(y) 1/10 1/5 3/5 4/5 1

P(Y ≤ 3) = F(3)
*must equal to 1
= 3/5
Question 5

litres, a certain mart in Sandakan. The probability density function of random variable

a) Find the distribution, F(z). Hence, find probability of the weekly demands for soft
drinks are between 200 litres to 600 litres.
b) Calculate E(5Z²-Z+3)
