Pmdas Gmdas

This document discusses the order of operations using the PMDAS or GMDAS rule. It states that when simplifying expressions with multiple operations, we first perform any calculations inside parentheses or other grouping symbols, then perform multiplication or division from left to right, and finally perform addition or subtraction from left to right. Several examples are provided and step-by-step workings are shown. The key steps of the PMDAS/GMDAS rule are summarized. Learners are then asked to practice applying the order of operations to solve expressions.

Quarter 1 – Module 5:

Performing a Series of
Operations Using PMDAS
or GMDAS
After going through this module, you are
expected to:

• State, explain and interpret the PMDAS

or GMDAS rule; and

• Apply PMDAS or GMDAS rule in

simplifying numbers with a series of
operations.
Simplify the expressions below.
1) 40 ÷ 2 x 4 + 6 = ____
A. B. 20 C. 46 D.
11 86

2) (15 – 6) + (4 – 1) x 24 = ____
A. B. 91 C. D. 288
81 151
3.) (2 x 30) + (90 ÷ 2) = ____
A. B. 105 C. D. 125
Performing a Series of Operations Using
PMDAS or GMDAS
The PMDAS or GMDAS rule tells us that in
simplifying expressions involving a series of
operations.
P arentheses G rouping symbols
M ultiplication M ultiplication
D ivision D ivision
A ddition A ddition
S ubtraction S ubtraction
We first simplify all operations inside the
Parentheses ( ( ) ) or other Grouping
Symbols like braces ( { } ) and brackets
( [ ] ).

Second, perform Multiplication or

Division, whichever comes first from left
to right.

Third, do the Addition or Subtraction,

whichever comes first from left to right
also.

What I Have Learned
In performing a series of operations
on whole numbers involving more than
two operations using the (PMDAS) or
(GMDAS) rule, you must;
What I Have Learned
First, perform all operations inside
Parentheses or (2)
the (1) _____________
Grouping
_____________ symbols, provided
that you will multiply or divide first,
whichever comes first, from left to
right before adding or subtracting,
whichever comes first, from left to
right;
What I Have Learned
Second, perform all (3)
Multiplication and (4)
______________
Division
_______________, whichever
comes first from left to right; and;
What I Have Learned
Third, perform all (5)
Addition
_______________ and (6)
Subtraction whichever comes
_____________,
first from left to right.
Perform the operations. Choose the
correct answers in the P/GMDAS card.
Write your answer in your activity
notebook.
