DIFFERENCE OF TWO
SQUARES
Mathematics 8
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:
1. state whether or not the given expression is a difference of two
squares; and
2. factor completely the difference of two squares.
Factoring the difference of two squares is a
special type of factoring, a problem that is
often used in mathematics.
The product of the sum and difference of two numbers is the
difference between two squares.

Conversely, the difference of two squares is the product of the
sum and difference of two numbers.

Mathematics 8
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:
1. state whether or not the given expression is a sum and
difference of two cubes; and
2. factor completely the sum and difference of two cubes.
These are the formulas for the sum
and difference of two cubes:
3 3 2 2
𝑥 + 𝑦 =( 𝑥 + 𝑦 )( 𝑥 − 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 )
3 3 2 2
𝑥 − 𝑦 =( 𝑥 − 𝑦 )( 𝑥 +𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 )
In order to use these two formulas, you must be
able to recognize numbers that are perfect cubes.
