Example : design a rectangular sections for the
beam shown in the figure, loads, and ρ values
shown. Beam weights are not included in the
loads given. Show sketches of cross sections
including bar sizes, arrangements, and spacing.
Assume concrete weighs 23.5 kN/m3. fy = 420
MPa and fc = 28 MPa, ρ= 0.01415,reduction
factor ()=0.9, h-d=75 mm, beam weight = 6
kN/m.

4
Solution

1.Compute wu and Mu

2. Find (If ρ is given, we can use the table to get (MPa) then bd2

USE Table B.9

5
0.0141 5.185
0.01415 X
0.0142 5.217

X=5.201 MPa= 5.201*106 N/m2

Solution

3. Findbd2 = 0.1344 m3 =1.344*108 mm3

If

You can choose any value of b and h while keeping h/b a

reasonable value = 2

Try 700 ----- d= 620 mm

4. find As = =0.0145*350*625= 3095 mm2

7
𝑈𝑠𝑒4 ¿32− −−−− 𝐴𝑠=3276 𝑚𝑚2
Or for example 8
Solution
4. Check your solution
1.Beam weight = area * density =350*700*10-6*23.5 kN/m3
=5.758 kN/m < assumed (6 kN/m)------ okay

2. =
= 0.0181 (ρ values from Appendix B, Table B.7).

3. = 3276*420/(0.85*28*350)=165.17 mm
• = 0.9*3276 m*420(625-165.17/2)= 671.7*106 (*mm2* 106 N/m2
*mm* ) = 671.7*103
N.m /1000=671.7 kN.m > 630 kN.m----okay

4. Check the minmum width

9
(b min= 331 mm < b used(350 mm)-----okay 10

Example1(singly reinforced)

Compute the nominal moment

strength, of a beam (Fig 1)
with = 20 (β=0.85), =420 MPa,
b=250mm, d=500 mm, and
three No. 25 bars (Table A-
1M or diameter =25.4 mm).
Note that the difference
between the total section
depth, h, and the effect Fig 1
depth, d, is 65 mm, which is a
typical value for beam sections
designed with metric
dimensions.

3. Use equilibrium to find a

4. find nominal moment capacity
