ADAPTIVE CONTROL

RATIONAL
What is ACT-R?
• ACT-R is a cognitive architecture, a
theory about how human cognition works.
• Looks like a (procedural) programming
language.
• Constructs based on assumptions about
human cognitions.
What is ACT-R?
• ACT-R is an integrated cognitive
architecture.
• Brings together not just different aspects of
cognition, but of
• Cognition
• Perception
• Action
What is ACT-R?
• Developed by John Robert Anderson and
Christian Lebiere at Carnegie Mellon
University. Like any cognitive architecture,
ACT-R aims to define the basic and
irreducible cognitive and perceptual
operations that enable the human mind.
What is ACT-R?
• On the exterior, ACT-R looks
like a programming language;
however, its constructs reflect
assumptions about human
cognition.

Three Types of
Memory Structure
Declarative Memory
• Facts
• Washington, D.C. is the capital of the U.S.
• 2+3=5.
• Knowledge a person might be expected to
have to solve a problem.
Procedural Memory
• Procedural memory: Knowledge
about how to do something.
• How to type the letter “Q”.
• How to drive.
• How to perform addition.
Working Memory
A cognitive system with a limited capacity that
can hold information temporarily. Working memory is
important for reasoning and the guidance of decision-
making and behavior. Working memory is often used
synonymously with short-term memory, but some
theorists consider the two forms of memory distinct,
assuming that working memory allows for the
manipulation of stored information, whereas short-
term memory only refers to the short-term storage of
information.
ACT-R IN EDUCATION
“The ACT-R model of memory could be
applied in education in a number of ways.
Teachers should be aware that there are
different kinds of memory, and that these
associate with each other through the
limited Working Memory. Overloading WM
with too much information at once will not
be conducive to good knowledge making.
ACT-R IN EDUCATION
At the same time, encouraging
students to combine their knowledge with
actions can have the effect of reinforcing
learning in both procedural and declarative
memory. A combination of thinking and
doing can be a powerful mix of activity to
deepen learning in just about any subject
area.”
