I.OBJECTIVES
After the discussion, the students will be able to:

1.) Discuss the application of Partially-filled Cylinder

And Sphere.

2.) Define the important terms.

3.) Apply the formulas to some examples and solution.

4.) Site the importance of the topic to the real world

and course.

Illigan, Crescencio
II.HISTORY AND DEFINTION OF
IMPORTANT TERMS
SPHERE

WHO INVENTED SPHERE?

- Plato and Aristotle defined the principal dogmas of the

spherical model: a round, immobile Earth at the center, and the
celestial bodies' uniform circular motions around it.

Egos, Niño Rey

When was the sphere discovered?

It was around 500 B.C. that Pythagoras first proposed a

spherical Earth, mainly on aesthetic grounds rather than on any
physical evidence. Like many Greeks, he believed the sphere was
the most perfect shape.

Egos, Niño Rey

WHERE DOES SPHERE COME FROM?

Etymology. From Middle English spere, from Old French

sphere, from Late Latin sphēra, earlier Latin sphaera (“ball,
globe, celestial sphere”), from Ancient Greek σφαῖρα (sphaîra,
“ball, globe”), of unknown origin.

Egos, Niño Rey

II. DEFINITION OF TERMS
 PARTIALLY- FILLED CYLINDER

Partially- Filled Cylinder- is a closed solid that has two

parallel (usually circular) bases connected by a curved
surface.
Radius- The radius “r” of a cylinder is the radius of a base.
Area- is the region covered by a cylinder in three-
dimensional space.
Volume- The volume of a partially filled cylinder is a
shape formed when a cylinder is cut by a plane parallel to
the sides of the cylinder.
Height- The height “h: is the perpendicular distance
between the bases.

Albert, Noel
II. DEFINITION OF TERMS
 SPHERE

SPHERE- the sphere is a geometrical figure that is round

in shape. The sphere is defined in a three-dimensional
space. The sphere is three dimensional solid, that has
surface area and volume. Just like a circle, each point of
the sphere is at an equal distance from the center.

Albert, Noel
The distance between surface and
Radius center of the sphere is called its
radius.
The distance from one point to
Diameter another point on the surface of the
sphere, passing through the center,
is called its diameter.
The region occupied by the surface
Surface area of the sphere is called it’s surface
area
The amount of space occupied by
Volume any spherical object is called its
volume

CALCULATE THE VOLUME AND VOLUME OF LIQUID INSIDE
A VERTICAL CYLINDER IN AN OIL TANKER IF THE GIVEN IS:

Height of Tank.h = 10¹

Height of Fill.f = 5¹
Diameter.d = 12¹
Radius.r = d/2 = 12/2 = 6¹
Formula:
Total Volume of Cylinder = Area x Height
Area = π r²

CALCULATE THE VOLUME AND VOLUME OF LIQUID INSIDE
A VERTICAL CYLINDER IN AN OIL TANKER IF THE GIVEN IS:

Volume (Tank)
v = π r² h
v = 3.14 x 6 x 10
v = 1130.4 ft.
To convert to US gallons = 1130.4 x 7.48 = 8455.392

CALCULATE THE VOLUME AND VOLUME OF LIQUID INSIDE
A VERTICAL CYLINDER IN AN OIL TANKER IF THE GIVEN IS:

Volume (Fill Inside)

v = π r² f
v = 3.14 x 6² x 5
v = 565.2 ft.
To convert to US gallons = 565.2 x 7.48 = 4227.696

A pressure vessel on a ship has a 200-centimeter length and a 150-
centimeter diameter. The depth of this liquid-filled pressure vessel was
35 cm. The commanding officer then requests the amount of liquid that
is present in the pressure vessel. What is its volume?

r= 75cm

h= 35cm

l= 200

A=?

V=?
Alvarez, Julianne
cos–¹ (75-35/75) (75)² - (r-h) √2 (75)(35) - (35)²

Area = 322313.1759cm²

VOLUME = Area × Length

V= 322313.1759 × 200

V= 64462635.18cm³

IV. APPLICATION

In application in real life of partially filled cylinder and sphere in

relating to our course is through a pressure vessel. So, pressure
vessel used in a variety of applications in both industry and the
private sector. It is related to our topic because pressure vessel can
be identified as cylindrical vessel and spherical vessel.

Borromeo, Denzel
IV. APPLICATION
Spherical vessel his type of vessel is preferred
for storage of high-pressure fluids. A sphere is a
very strong structure. The even distribution of
stresses on the sphere's surfaces, both internally
and externally, generally means that there are no
weak points. An advantage of spherical storage
vessels is, that they have a smaller surface area
per unit volume than any other shape of vessel.
Cylinders are widely used for storage due to their
being less expensive to produce than spheres.
However, cylinders are not as strong as spheres
due to the weak point at each end.

Borromeo, Denzel
IV. IMPORTANCE
Cargo can be handled in various ways with
various tools. These, commonly known as cargo
gear, are very important to smooth cargo
operations. They accelerate the handling rate
and reduce the risk of damage due to improper
handling.

Tank volume: The total volume of the tank

minus an allowance made for the frames and
beams. It is good practice not to fill the tank
completely to allow for expansion of the cargo.

Borromeo, Denzel
IV. IMPORTANCE

Tankers normally have ullaging and

sampling ports that reduce the risks of
explosion. Electronic means of sounding the
tanks are also used. This is common on
modern tankers and makes use of ultrasonic
waves of energy to measure the level of the
liquid. Then the tank calibration tables are
used and corrections for temperature and
density are applied so as to obtain the exact
amount of cargo in that tank.
