DOCTRINE The basic meaning of the term doctrine is “teaching.” Christian doctrine, accordingly, is the attempt to state in intellectually responsible terms the message of the gospel and the content of the faith it elicits DOCTRINES: - TRINITY - VIRGIN BIRTH - DEITY OF CHRIST - RESURRECTION - LAST JUDGMENT TRINITY The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. These definitions express three crucial truths: (1) the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, (2) each Person is fully God, (3) there is only one God. VIRGIN BIRTH Virgin Birth, doctrine of traditional Christianity that Jesus Christ had no natural father but was conceived by Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit. The doctrine that Mary was the sole natural parent of Jesus is based on the infancy narratives contained in the Gospel accounts of Matthew and Luke. DEITY OF CHRIST The Deity of Jesus shows us there is a Savior for mankind and how it is Him. Mankind inherently looks for a savior, someone or something to save him from the things he has done wrong, his weaknesses, his failures, his sicknesses. He will look within himself, to other gods, religions or philosophies. RESURRECTION According to the Christian faith, resurrection is the pivotal event when “God raised Jesus from the dead” after he was crucified by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. LAST JUDGMENT Christianity teaches that all will stand to be judged by God at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In early Christian art the scene is one of Christ as judge, the resurrection of the dead, the weighing of souls, the separation of the saved and the damned, and representations of heaven and hell. GOD ( FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT) FATHER SON The Father is the The Son is the God of Israel (the historical creator God of Jesus of Nazareth. Genesis). THE HOLY The HolySPIRIT Spirit is the presence or spirit of God that binds them together. SECTS: - ROMAN CATHOLIC - GREEK/EASTERN ORTHODOX - PROTESTANTISM ETC. ISSUES: -ECUMENISM -SEXUALITY ISSUES (e.g., contraception, homosexuality, ordination of women) ECUMENISM Ecumenism, from the Greek word “oikoumene,” meaning “the whole inhabited world,” is the promotion of cooperation and unity among Christians. Jesus Christ founded one Church and, in the midst of his Passion, prayed, “That they may all be one.” (John 17:21) In fidelity to that, the Catholic Church takes part in an ecumenical movement seeking visible unity among the diversity of Christian Churches and ecclesial communities. CONTRACEPTION They often teach that using contraception to prevent children altogether is not desirable. The Roman Catholic Church only allows 'natural' birth control, by which it means only having sex during the infertile period of a woman's monthly cycle. Artificial methods of contraception are banned. HOMOSEXUALITY One study says the term most associated with Christian is “anti-gay.” But the culture war often obscures how, within actual Christian communities, discussion on homosexuality is often personal, nuanced, and difficult. ORDINATION OF WOMEN Blood, Gender and Power in Christianity and Judaism. In the Catholic and Orthodox Christian traditions, women are not permitted to be ordained as priests of the church. According to Catholic doctrine, priests are supposed to represent the likeness of Jesus, a male figure. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
