Electrical Protection Devices

The document describes various types of electrical protection devices and accessories used in power distribution systems, including: - MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) for overload protection up to 100A. - MCCBs (Moulded Case Circuit Breakers) for overload protection from 100A to 1000A with adjustable trip settings. - Air and vacuum circuit breakers for higher current distribution from 1000A to 10,000A/3000A with fully adjustable settings. - ELCBs (Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers) and RCDs/RCCBs (Residual Current Devices/Circuit Breakers) which provide earth leakage protection by detecting current mismatches between phase and neutral wires.

Electrical Protection Devices &

Accessories
MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)

 Over load Protection

 Rated current not more than 100 A.
 Trip characteristics normally not adjustable.
 Thermal or thermal-magnetic operation.
MCCB ( Moulded Case Circuit Breaker):

 Over load Protection

 Rated current up to 1000 A.
 Trip current may be adjustable.
 Thermal or thermal-magnetic operation.
Air Circuit Breaker:

 Rated current up to 10,000 A.

 Trip characteristics often fully adjustable.
 Usually electronically controlled—some models are
microprocessor controlled.
 Often used for main power distribution in large industrial
plant, where the breakers are arranged in draw-out
enclosures for ease of maintenance
Vaccum Circuit Breaker:

 With rated current up to 3000 A,

 These breakers interrupt the arc in a vaccum bottle.
 These can also be applied at up to 35,000 V. Vaccum
breakers tend to have longer life expectancies
between overhaul than do air circuit breakers.
ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker):

 Earth Leakage Protection

 Phase (line), Neutral and Earth wire connected through
ELCB.
 ELCB is working based on Earth leakage current.
RCD (Residual Current Device) / RCCB ( Residual Current Circuit Breaker) :

 Earth Leakage Protection

 Phase (line) and Neutral both wires connected through RCD.

 It trips the circuit when there is earth fault current.

 The amount of current flows through the phase (line) should return
through neutral .
 any mismatch between two currents flowing through phase and
neutral detect by RCD and trip the circuit within 30Miliseconed.
Working Principle of RCCB
 Both circuit conductors (supply and return) are run through a
sensing coil; any imbalance of the currents means the
magnetic field does not perfectly . The device detects the
imbalance and trips the contact.
RCBO (Residual Circuit Breaker with Over Load):

 It is possible to get a combined MCB and RCCB in one device

(Residual Current Breaker with Overload RCBO), the
principals are the same, but more styles of disconnection are
fitted into one pack
Isolators
  a disconnector or isolator switch or disconnect switch is
used to make sure that an electrical circuit can be completely
de-energised for service or maintenance

Transmission DB Load
Surge Protection Device

 The terms surge protection device (SPD), or  transient voltage surge

suppressor (TVSS), are used to describe electrical devices typically installed in
power distribution panels, process control systems, communications systems,
and other heavy-duty industrial systems, for the purpose of protecting against
electrical surges and spikes, including those caused by lightning
 Lightning strikes create surge currents which generate transient over voltages in
the power distribution and data transmission networks. The OVR SPDs divert the
surge current directly to the ground and limit the overvoltage to values
compatible with the equipment connected to the network.
Lightning Arrester

 Surge arresters are devices that help prevent

damage to apparatus due to high voltages.
The arrester provides a low-impedance path
to ground for the current from a lightning
strike or transient voltage and then restores
to a normal operating conditions
