Reactivity and displacement reactions

L.O
To define the term reactivity series and
arrange metals in decreasing order of their
reactivity.
To explain the displacement reactions metal
and metal sulphates
To explain the displacement reactions of metal
and metal oxides.
What is reactivity series?
• Reactivity series is a list of metals
arranged in decreasing order of their
reactivity. Most reactive metals are at the
top while the least reactive metals at the
bottom.
Help Sheet
Most reactive

Potassium
Sodium
Lithium
Calcium
Magnesium
Zinc
Iron
Least reactive
Copper

will displace a l__ reactive metal f___ it’s
compound.

Know
Displacement reactions involve a metal and a
compound of a different metal. In a
displacement reaction a more reactive metal
will displace a less reactive metal from it’s
compound.

Know Watch what happens to the iron nail when we
put it in the copper sulphate solution

1. What type of reaction did you just observe?

2. How do you know a reaction happened?
3. Why did the iron displace the copper in the
copper sulphate solution?
Know
During a displacement reaction the
metal in a compound is replaced
with a more reactive metal to form
a new compound.

Magnesium + Copper Sulphate  Magnesium Sulphate + Copper
