First Law of Thermodynamics
The first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states
that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or
changed from one form to another.
First Law of Thermodynamics
Energy transformations
First Law of Thermodynamics
The change in internal energy of a system is equal to the heat added to the system minus
the work done by the system.
Heat Engine and Heat Pump
In thermodynamics, Heat engine is a system that converts heat to mechanical energy.

To have a heat engine you need

1- Source of heat: Gasoline, diesel fuel, coil.
2- Working fluid : A substance that undergoes a thermodynamic
change of state, and in the process will do work on its
surroundings petrol-air mixtures, water that is heated and
turned to steam.
3- Energy transformation part (Piston, Rotating turbine)
Heat Engine and Heat Pump
Heat engine pump is device that transfers heat from a colder area to a hotter area by
using mechanical energy (work).

Instead of working being done BY an engine, work is

being done TO the heat pump.

Efficiency and COP
Efficiency: How much you got out divided by total input to the system (Never be
unity,100%).
COP: Total useful out put work you got divided by the energy you have to pay for (Can
be greater the unity).
