Badminton Strokes

and Shots
Overhead Forehand Stroke
• is very common and is used most often in badminton.
If you’re a beginner, learn how to perform this stroke
first before proceeding to learn other types of badminton
shots.
In badminton, this stroke generates the most power.
The power of a badminton forehand stroke comes from
correct technique, NOT how much strength you exert
into a swing. The larger the swing motion, the more
momentum generated. Hence, more power.
Overhead Backhand Stroke
• The correct technique to perform a badminton
backhand stroke is more complicated than a
tennis backhand. The correct backhand
technique is about generating power. Similar to
the forehand, you make a complete backhand
swing to generate the power to hit strong
backhand shots.
Underarm Forehand Stroke

• The badminton underarm forehand stroke

is performed when you take a shuttle in
front of you (normally when your opponent
hits a drop shot to you). It's fairly easy to
inject power into underarm strokes
(compared to overhead strokes).
Underarm Backhand Stroke

• This stroke is usually performed when your

opponent hits a badminton drop shot to your
backhand area at the front of the court. You don't
need to swing too hard for an underarm stroke. A gentle
underarm swing is sufficient to send the shuttle right to
the back of the court.
•Overhead forehand – the most common we see, the
first to learn
•Overhead backhand – many people’s main
weakness
•Underarm forehand – a low shot on the forehand
side
•Underarm backhand – a low shot on the backhand
side
Basic Shots in Badminton

1.Clear
2.Drop
3.Drive
4.Smash
5.Lift
6.Net Kill
Clear Shot

Clear is a defensive stroke in

Badminton and played from the
backcourt to backcourt. When you
are not in your base position, you
need time to gain your position.
Drop Shot
Drop is a semi-offensive shot in badminton.
This shot is played from the mid or
backcourt to the forecourt of your
opponent’s court. An effective drop shot
should be low over the net. The swing of
your racket will be in the downward
direction. A drop shot is played when your
opponent is in the backcourt.
Smash Shot
Smash is the most powerful and killer shot
in badminton. Here the swing of your
racket will be downward as well as forward.
You should hit the shuttle at the highest
point possible. Whenever there is an
opportunity, a good smash often brings
points for you.
Lift Shot
• Lift is the most defensive shot in
badminton. In the case of lift stroke, the
swing of your racket is upward. So the
trajectory of the birdie is higher even more
than clear shot. When both you and your
opponent are in front of the net exchanging
the shuttle, a lift shot pushes your opponent
on the backcourt.
Net Kill Shot
• Net kill is an offensive shot, the
purpose of which is to end the rally. This
stroke is taken very close to the net to hit
the shuttle downwards on the opponent’s
side. This is a useful shot when you will get
a weak, high net shot.
Drive Shot
The drive may be a defensive or
offensive stroke. It is a flat hit, with
the straight head of the racket, over
the net pointing towards the mid or
backcourt.
