Lesson:62 Using

Weather Instrument
SCI Q4

By: Haidee B. Simbe

Objective:
 Use weather instruments to
measure different weather
components
• Room Thermometer
• Anemometer
• Wind vane
• Wind sock

Let us Recall
some concepts:
A cloud is a large collection of
very tiny droplets of water or ice
crystals. The droplets are so
small and light that they can
What are clouds?
float in the air.
How are clouds formed?
All air contains water, but near the ground
it is usually in the form of an invisible gas
called water vapor. When warm air rises,
it expands and cools. Cool air can't hold as
much water vapor as warm air, so some of
the vapor condenses onto tiny pieces of
dust that are floating in the air and forms
a tiny droplet around each dust particle.
When billions of these droplets come
together they become a visible cloud.
Cirrus Clouds

Cirrus clouds are high feathery

clouds. They are up so high they
are actually made of ice particles.
They are indicators of fair
weather when they are scattered
in a clear blue sky.
Cirrus Clouds
Stratus Clouds
Stratus clouds are uniform
grayish clouds that often cover
the entire sky. They resemble
fog that doesn't reach the
ground. Light mist or drizzle
sometimes falls out of these
clouds.
Stratus clouds look like flat sheets
of clouds. These clouds can mean
an overcast day or steady rain.
They may stay in one place for
several days.
Cumulus Clouds
Cumulus clouds are the puffy clouds
that look like puffs of cotton.
Cumulus clouds that do not get very
tall are indicators of fair weather. If
they do grow tall, they can turn into
thunderstorms. The bottom of
cumulus clouds are fairly close to the
ground.

Nimbus Cloud

A nimbus cloud is a cloud that

produces precipitation. Usually
the precipitation reaches the
ground as rain, hail, snow, or
sleet. Falling precipitation may
evaporate as virga. Rain comes
out of nimbus clouds and this is
called precipitation.
Nimbus Cloud
The primary conditions of
the atmosphere, or weather
elements, are those of
•Wind
•Temperature
•Pressure
•Humidity
•Clouds
•Precipitation
1. Wind is the movement of
air parallel to Earth's
surface
2. Humidity is the amount
of moisture in the air.
3. Temperature is the
degree of hotness or
coldness on a definite scale
4. Pressure is the weight of force
that is produced when something
presses or pushes against
something else
5. Clouds is a visible mass of
particles of condensed vapor
suspended in the atmosphere of a
planet
6. Precipitation is the water that
falls into the ground as rain, snow
etc.
THERMOMETER
A THERMOMETER measures
the air temperature. Most
thermometers are closed
glass tubes containing liquids
such as alcohol or mercury.
When air around the tube
heats the liquid, the liquid
expands and moves up the
tube. A scale then shows
what the actual temperature
is.
A RAIN GAUGE measures the
amount of rain that has fallen over
a specific time period.

RAIN GAUGE
A WIND VANE is an instrument that
determines the direction from
which the wind is blowing.

WIND VANE
An ANEMOMETER measures wind
speed. The cups catch the wind,
turning a dial attached to the
instrument. The dial shows the wind
speed.

ANEMOMETER
A windsock is a conical textile
tube (which resembles a giant
sock, hence its name) designed to
indicate wind direction and
relative wind speed.

Group Activity
Group 1: Types of Clouds

Group 2: Weather Elements

Group 3: Weather Instruments

Group Activity:
Provide each group a wall thermometer.

Exploration:
1. Let each group report their findings
on the activities.
2. Process the answers of the pupils.
what is the average temperature
Explanation:
outside the classroom?
what is the average temperature
inside the classroom ?
What do these data of air tells you?
It tells us that the angle at which the
sun’s ray strike the surface affect the
temperature of a place.
At what time of the day is the
temperature highest?
At noon time
At what time of the day is the
temperature lowest?
At 6:00 AM
At what weather condition is the
temperature high?
On a fine weather
At what weather condition is the
temperature low?
During rainy days
What factors affect the days
temperature?
Time and weather conditions affects
the days temperature
What are the instruments used to
measure air temperature?
(room/wall thermometer)

What is the importance of knowing

how to use these instruments?
We can tell the weather for a day and
prepare ourselves for a certain
activity
What are you going to do to take care of
these instruments?
Do not with it
Put in the proper place after using it.
To predict the weather, the temperature of the
surroundings is measured. A thermometer is used
to measure temperature. A room thermometer has
numbers etched on each side. The left side shows
the Celsius reading. Its highest number is 100
while its lowest is 0. Look at the red column of
Background Information
the thermometer. The number near the red
column tells the temperature of the air.
A thermometer may bear the
Fahrenheit, the Celsius scale, or
both. Air temperature is read in

44°C
degrees Fahrenheit or °F and
Degrees Celsius or °C. The
Fahrenheit scale is now seldom
Thermometer
used. there are other kinds of
thermometer such as clinical, room,
and scientific.
The angle at which the sun's rays strike the
surface affects the temperature of a place. Places
near the equator have high temperature because
they receive direct rays of the sun.

The time of the day and the time of the year

also affect the temperature. In the northern
hemisphere, it is warmer in the summer than in
the winter. This is because the hours of sunshine
are longer and the sun's rays hit the northern
hemisphere more directly. Consequently, more
light energy is received and changed into heat.
How to use and interpret readings of
room thermometer?
