GAMABA IN THE
PHILIPPINES
The National Living Treasures Award,
alternatively known as the Gawad sa
Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA; lit. 'Award
for the Creators of the Country'), is
conferred to a person or group of artists
recognized by the Government of the
Philippines for their contributions to the
country's intangible cultural heritage.
WHY GAMABA IS IMPORTANT?

• acknowledge the importance of traditional folk artists;


revitalize the artistic traditions of communities; provide
mechanisms for identifying and assisting qualified
traditional folk artists to transfer their skills to the
community

With his efforts in preserving the Ambahan Poetry of the Hanunuo
Mangyans, he received a National Living Treasures Award or the
Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) Award in the year 1993
– recognizing Ginaw Bilog as a GAMABA Artist for music and
poetry.

Along with the basal and kulilal ensemble, MB Masino Intaray was
conferred the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan in 1993 for his
significant contribution to literature and performing arts. He
passed away in his hometown at the age of 70 after succumbing
to a series of strokes compounded by his diabetes.

• Samaon Sulaiman was a famous Filipino
musician loved by many. He received the
National Living Treasure award. He is mostly
known for his mastery of the indigenous
'kutiyapi' instrument.

• Lang Dulay (August 3, 1928 - April 30, 2015) was a


Filipino traditional weaver who was a recipient of the
National Living Treasures Award. She is credited with
preserving her people's tradition of weaving T'nalak, a
dyed fabric made from refined abaca fibre.

• Manlilikha ng Bayan Salinta Monon is known for the quality of
her work and the intricacies of her designs. She had mastered
one of the most difficult and favored designs, the binuwaya
(crocodile). Her meticulousness in weaving enabled her to
easily identify the designs, as well as the weaver of a particular
piece at a glance. Upon receiving the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan in 1998, she helped establish the School of Living
Tradition in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, where she taught the art
of weaving to the younger generations in her community.

• He is instrumental in establishing the practice of children


wearing traditional Kalinga clothing for important school
events as well as the teaching of Kalinga folk songs in
schools. He also lobbied for the broadcast of traditional
Kalinga music along with contemporary music in their
local radio station.

UWANG AHADAS

• Manlilikha ng Bayan Uwang Ahadas is gifted with a talent


for music which he learned by simply observing the
performances of the older members of the Yakan
community. He is known for his mastery in playing
traditional Yakan instruments such as the agung, gabbang,
and kwintangan kayu.

FEDERICO CABALLERO

• Federico Caballero is a Filipino epic chanter who is a


recipient of the National Living Treasures Award. Caballero
is of the Panay-Bukidnon people from the Central Panay
mountains. He is known for his work on the documentation
of the oral literature, particularly the ten epics.

• Darhata Sawabi is a Filipino weaver from Parang, Sulu


known for pis syabit, a traditional Tausūg cloth tapestry
worn as a head covering by the people of Jolo. She is a
recipient of the National Living Treasures Award, having
given the distinction in 2004.[1] Pis refers to the geometric
pattern that is said to be derived from the Indic mandala,
and siyabit stands for the hook and technique

• Eduardo Tubig Mutuc of Apalit, Pampanga who was


conferred this prestigious recognition in 2004. The
GAMABA or National Living Treasure award is one of
the most prestigious awards given to traditional artists
in the Philippines, similar to the National Artist award.

• Haja Amina Appi of Ungos Matata, Tandubas, Tawi-


Tawi created intricate mats that boast beautiful
geometric designs, vibrant colors, and fine symmetry.
She was awarded National Living Treasure in 2004.

• He is known for being self-sustaining in his craft as he


personally harvests the tabungaw, a round type of gourd
(Family Cucurbitaceae) planted specifically for making
kattukong.

• She became best known for weaving the sinan-sabong,
since it is the most challenging pattern among the four.
Her father bought her first loom, made by a local
craftman using sag'gat hardwood. Gamayo's loom lasted
for 30 years. Already past 80 years old, Gamayo
remained committed in making inabel.

• A master magtetennun (weaver) of Yakan textiles,
MB Ambalang Ausalin, or Apuh Ambalang, was
renowned for her excellent skills in Yakan weaving
techniques and designs, such as the sinalu'an and
seputangan, the trademark of which were eye-
catching colors and balanced combination of minute
diamonds and other geometric

• She is credited with creating "some of the biggest, most


subtly beautiful mats to be seen anywhere in Southeast
Asia." She was given the National Living Treasure Award
by the Philippines through the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts in 2016.

• Fu Yabing Masalon Dulo (8 August 1914 – 26 January


2021), commonly referred to as Fu Yabing, was a Filipino
textile master weaver and dyer, credited with preserving
the Blaan traditional mabal tabih art of ikat weaving and
dyeing.
