GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA)
- First awarded in 1993 to
R.A 7355 in
three outstanding artists in
April 1992 music and poetry

In response to the pressing


concern of folk art and
cultural preservation.
NCCA - National Commission for Culture
and the Arts

- for the finest traditional artists of the land

- adopts a program that will ensure the transfer


of their skills to others and

- to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill


pride among our people about the genius of the
Manlilikha ng Bayan
The recipient of - are exemplary individuals whose life, works
and identity are described as part of our
GAMABA national character

whose distinctive skills have reached such a


high level of technical and artistic excellence
and

- have been passed on to and widely practiced by the


present generation in his/her community with the same
degree of technical and artistic competence.
How does one
become a
Manlilikha ng
Bayan?
a. - He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional
cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has
preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions.

b. - He/she must have engaged in a folk art tradition


that has been in existence and documented for at
least fifty (50) years.
c -He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials
needed by the art, and must have an established reputation
in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary
technical quality.

d - He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on


to other members of the community their skills in
the folk art for which the community is traditionally
known.
But can a traditional artist be a
recipient of GAMABA even if
she/he is infirmed or incapable
of teaching?
a. - He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has
consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her
art,

b. - He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization


of his/her community’s artistic tradition.
c - He/she has passed on to the other members of the
community skills in the folk art for which the
community is traditionally known.

d - His/her community has recognized him/her


as master and teacher of his/her craft.
What are the incentives
received by the awardee? - specially designed
gold medallion,

- an initial grant of
P100,000 and - P10,000 monthly for life.

- an additional monthly personal allowance of


P14,000 for the awardees, whenever
circumstances so warrant by NCCA.

- During precolonial, times Ullalim – Kalinga
there were many epics Hinilawod - Hiligaynon
circulated in the country that
are passed on to the next
generation by mouth.

GINAW BILOG (1993)
- Ginaw Bilog helped preserved the Mangyan literary
tradition by documenting the pieces of ambahan
recorded not only on bamboo tubes but also on
notebooks passed on to him.

- The ambahan is a poetic literary form composed of


seven-syllables. It is usually sung.

FREDERICO CABALLERO (2000)
- He’s contribution is in the recording of the
dying oral tradition of epics.

- He documented 10 epics in language that is


no longer spoken.

- He is considered as bantugan.

MASINO INTARAY (1993)
- He is a musician and storyteller.
- He is skillful in basal, kulilal and bagit.
- He has mastered the traditions of his
people—the Palawan, Batak, and
Tagbanwa in the highlands of southern
Palawan.

SAMAON SULAIMAN (1993)

- A master in the use of the kulintang and


kudyapi.
- He was also a popular town barber and
served as an imam in Libutan Mosque.

- A musician and dancer.


- He turned the abandoned Capitol Building
into a museum.
- Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe

UWANG AHADAS (2000)
- made it his life's work to preserve and promote
Yakan culture through the traditional music and
instruments
- He is blind. His disability drew him in music.
- A hands-on teacher to fascinated and dedicated
individuals who wants to play yakan.

beads, shells and seeds. necklaces and other accessories.

That is used in many tourist destination to showcase


traditional crafts for local and foreign tourists.

LANG DULAY (1998)

- She was a master weaver (age of 12)


- Abaca fiber weaved in T’nak cloth
- Her designs are kabangi, bankiring and bulinglangit
- Her crafts inspired the 2014 cinemalaya film K’na the
Dreamweaver

SALINTA MONON (1998)

- In her crafts she used the abaca-ikat weaving (took 3-4


months to complete)
- The binuwaya (crocodile) is her beloved design
- her dedication and perseverance in creating weaving that
represent the Bagobo culture

DARHATA SAWABI (2005)

- A textile weaver from Sulu


- She is a Tausug famous for pis syabit
- A teacher who is sharing her knowledge to the women in
her community

EDUARDO MUTUC (2005)

- A exceptional Filipino sculptor (silver, bronze and woods)


- Church retablos, grand altars, carosas

HAJA AMINA APPI (2005)

- A master mat weaver in Tawi-Tawi


- She was highly known in her community bec. of her
distinctive designs & her sasa & kima-kima
- Featured in Brillante Mendoza’s film Thy Womb

TEOFILO GARCIA (2012)

- Master artisan, farmer and innovator


- Known for his crafted casque or tabungaw
- The interior of it is made from rattan

MAGDALENA GAMAYO (2012)

- Ilocano textile weaver of the abel (traditional blanket)


- pattern of sinan-sabong (flowers), kusikos (spiral), &
binakol inuritan (geometric)
