This lesson is about the properties of matter. It defines matter as anything that has mass and volume, and discusses the building blocks of atoms and subatomic particles. It explains how to measure the mass and volume of matter, the difference between mass and weight, and defines physical properties like density which is the ratio of mass to volume.

Matter
Objectives

• Define matter
• State what mass measures
• State what volume measures
• Define physical properties
• Calculate density
Atoms: Building blocks of all matter
• Atoms make up everything in the universe
• Atoms of a particular type make up elements
• Every element is made of one kind of atom.
Subatomic Particles
• Protons (positive)
• Electrons (negative)
• Neutrons (neutral)
Matter
• Different atoms can combine to make up all matter.
• Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume.
• There are 4 states of matter and we will only deal with 3
Measuring Matter: Mass
• Mass is the measure of how much stuff something has; aka the amount of
matter and the typical way to measure it is with grams/kilograms
Mass vs. Weight
Volume: the amount of space that a substance or an object takes up

• The unit for volume is Liters, but you can also use cubic centimeters (cm3)
• Measuring the volume of a solid is usually done by displacement

• We use what is called a graduated cylinder

Volume of liquid
• Volume is a measure of the amount of space that a substance or an object
takes up

• Liquids will take the shape of their container but have a definite volume
Gas
• Gases will take the shape and volume of whatever container they
occupy

• No definite shape, no definite volume

Properties of Matter
• There are 2 categories: Physical properties and Chemical properties
Physical properties can be measured without changing the makeup of
the matter.
Density:
• This physical property shows how closely packed the particles of
matter are

• It is found by dividing the mass by volume

Review
• What is matter?
• Something that has mass and takes up space (an amount of ‘stuff’)
• What is the difference between weight and mass?
• Mass will not change. Weight changes due to gravity’s pull
• What is the density of an object with a mass of 500g and a volume of
1000 cm3
