Accident
An event that has occurred on a road involving vehicles or pedestrians resulting in either
personal injury or damage to the property
Accident studies
The statical analysis of accident carried out periodically on a critical road stretch to arrive at the
cause of accidents and to find a suitable measure to reduce it
These critical stretch are marked as a “Blackspot” on a zone map and then studied in detail
Road Safety Engineering
Objectives of accident studies.
• To Study the cause of accidents
• To evaluate existing design
• To support a proposed design
• To carry out before and after studies to evaluate the improvement in
the problem
• To compute financial loss
Road Safety Engineering
Major Causes of accidents
1. Road user
2. Vehicle
3. Road and its conditions
4. Environmental Conditions
Road Safety Engineering
Various Causes of accidents
1. Driver
2. Pedestrian
3. Passengers
4. Vehicle defects
5. Road condition
6. Road design
7. Weather
8. Animals
9. Other causes
Road Safety Engineering
Steps in accident studies
i. Collection of accident data
ii. Preparation of accident report
iii. Preparation of Location file and location diagram
iv. Application of above records for suggesting preventive measures
Road Safety Engineering
• Collection of accident data(Road Accident Form A1-A4 & IRC 53)
1. General
2. Location
3. Details of the vehicle involved
4. Nature of accident
5. Road and traffic conditions
6. Primary causes of accidents
7. Accident cost

• Preparation of accident report
An accident report should be submitted to the police who would collect
further details and take certain legal actions based on the severity of
accident.
An accident report should have all the above data and all the other
details which will be helpful in further investigation of the accident
• Location file and location diagram
Location file is maintained to keep a record of number of accidents
occurring in a location.
These are done to locate the places with high accident intensities

Condition Diagram
• The condition diagram is a drawing of the accident location showing
the important physical conditions drawn to scale
• A Condition Diagram is generally drawn to scale showing roadway
limits, curves, kerb lines, bridges, culverts, trees, obstruction to
vision, signs, signals markings etc
• These Condition Diagram are drawn using certain symbols each
representing a different condition.
• Condition Diagram also should indicate traffic control devices, road
side amenities, presence of median, shoulder type, type of land use,
location of potholes, ruts, ponding etc

Collision Diagram
• Collision Diagram is a drawing showing the approximate path of
vehicles and pedestrians involved in the accident
• Collision diagram is most important to compare the accident pattern
before and after the remedial measures have been taken
• They provide information on the type and number of accident
including information such as time of day, climatic conditions,
pavement conditions, cause of accidents

Procedure to draw Collision Diagram
1. Sketch the location which need not be to scale
2. Show the path of each vehicle involved in the accident
3. Place the north arrow for orientation
4. Mention the type of collision , accident severity, time, day, date etc

Collision Diagram
The purpose of drawing a collision diagram is to understand the cause,
type, severity of accident at a location
The outcome of these drawings is to rectify the causes of accidents and
create suitable safety features
