About Sun Pharma

Sun Pharmaceuticals is the largest pharmaceutical company from India and the 4th
largest generic company in the world. It has capabilities across dosage forms like
injectables, sprays, ointments, creams, liquids, tablets, and capsules. Its businesses
include producing generics, branded generics, over the counter (OTC) products,
active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates in the full range of
dosage forms. It also produces specialty APIs. In FY19, US formulations
contributed the most to company’s sales with 37%, followed by India branded
formulations at 26%.
Dilip Shanghvi

He is the founder and managing director of Sun Pharmaceuticals. Born in a small


town as the son of a wholesale drug distributor, Shanghvi graduated from the
University of Calcutta with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. As a young man he
worked along with his father helping him in his wholesale generic drugs business
when the idea of opening his own drug manufacturing unit struck him. Despite his
lack of a formal science education, he started Sun Pharmaceutical Industries with a
two-man marketing team and five products in 1982.
The journey
• 1983 – first manufacturing plant at Vapi, Gujrat with 5 products and two-person
marketing team. 
• 1990 - added two more products and established a research centre.
• 1994 – launched their first IPO.
• 1996 - Sales network expanded across 24 countries.
• 1997 - first international acquisition – Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories,
USA.
• 2007 -established Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company.
• 2014 - Became world’s fifth largest specialty generic pharmaceutical company
with acquisition of Ranbaxy.
• 2015 - acquired GSK’s Opiates business in Australia.
• 2016 - acquired Biosintez to enter in Russian market.
• 2018 - acquired Pola Pharma in Japan.
• 2019 - entered Greater China market through partnership with China Medical
System Holdings.
• 2021 - Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted Sun Pharma an
Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to manufacture and distribute Molxvir.
• 2022 - entered into the nutrition bar segment in India with the launch of Revital
NXT.
