Lesson 1.3 Patterns and Regularities

This document discusses various types of patterns and symmetries found in nature. It describes reflection symmetry, radial symmetry, translation symmetry, and glide-reflection symmetry. It also discusses fractals, spirals, and examples of patterns in honeycombs, zebra stripes, spider webs, nautilus shells, tree rings, and turtle scutes. These natural patterns demonstrate mathematical regularities and symmetries.

Patterns

and
Regularities
Symmetry
 A sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion of balance or
an object is invariant to any of the various transformations

Reflection/Bilateral Symmetry
-It occurs when a line is drawn to
divide a shape in halves so that each
half is a reflection of the other.

Radial Symmetry
-The condition of having similar
parts regularly arranged around
a central axis.
Symmetry
 A sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion of balance or
an object is invariant to any of the various transformations

Translation Symmetry
-The results from moving a figure a
certain distance in a certain direction also
called translating (moving) by a vector
(length and direction)
Glide-Reflection Symmetry
-The symmetry that a figure has if it can
be made to fit exactly onto the original
when it is translated a given distance at a
given direction and then reflected over a
line
Fractals
- Is curve or geometric figure, each part of which has
the same statistical character as the whole
- One of the newest and most exciting branches of
mathematics
- Is a class of highly irregular shapes that are related
to continents, coastlines, and snowflakes

- It is useful in modeling structures in which similar

patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and
in describing partly random or chaotic
phenomenon such as crystal growth, fluid
turbulence, and galaxy formation
Spirals
- A logarithmic spirals (or growth spiral) is a self-
similar spiral curve which often appears in nature.
- It was first described by Rene Descartes and was
later investigated by Jacob Bernoulli.
Behavior of
Nature
Honeycomb
Honeycombs of bees show specific
regular repeating hexagons.

The design is highly efficient, it uses the

least amount of wax to store the honey
giving a strong structure with no gaps.
Zebra Stripes
In a zebra’s coat, the alternating
pattern of blacks and white are due to
mathematical rules that govern the
pigmentation chemicals of the skin.
Spider Web
Spider webs illustrate a beautiful
pattern.

The spider creates a structure by

performing innate steps.
Nautilus Shell
The nautilus shell has natural pattern
which contains a spiral shape called
logarithmic spiral.
Rings of Trees
Age of trees can be determined by
applying dendrochronology which is a
scientific method of dating based on
the amount of rings found in the core
of a tree.
Turtle
The age of turtle can be estimated
based from its scutes.

The smaller number of scutes is in the

center and is the oldest one.
