Thermal pollution refers to the harmful increase in water temperature from industrial and power plant effluents. Major sources include atomic power plants, coal plants, hydroelectric plants, and industrial and domestic waste. Increased water temperatures can reduce dissolved oxygen levels harming aquatic life, interfere with biological activities like reproduction, and allow invasive warm-water organisms. Measures to reduce thermal pollution include cooling effluents in ponds before discharge and using cooling towers.

THERMAL POLLUTION
Presented By Sreeja.C Department of Physical Science Grace College of Education Padanthalumoodu INTRODUCTION
Thermal pollution is the degradation of
water quality by any process that changes ambient water temperature. It is the harmful increase in water temperature in streams, rivers, lakes or occasionally, coastal ocean waters. MEANING Thermal pollution refers to the detrimental effects of hot effluents discharged by various power plants and industries. It denotes the impairment of quality and deterioration of acquatic and terrestrial environment. IMPORTANT SOURCES OF THERMAL POLLUTION 1. Atomic power plants 2. Coal- fired power plants 3. Hydro- electric power plants 4. Industrial effluents 5. Domestic sewage ADVERSE EFFECTS OF THERMAL POLLUTION Reduction in Dissolved Oxygen
Concentration of dissolved oxygen
decreases with increase in temperature and as such the hot industrial effluents discharged in streams and rivers destroy the acquatic organisms due to non- availability of adequate oxygen. Change in Water Properties
A rise in temperature changes
the physical and chemical properties. The decrease in solubility of gases, viscosity and density increases the settling speed of suspended particles which seriously affect the food supplies of acquatic organisms. Interference with Biological Activities and Reproduction Rise in temperature increases the toxity of poisonous substances present in water which makes fishes to perish. Changes in temperature upsets the biological activities of acquatic organisms such as metabolism, respiration, excretion, reproduction, etc. Warm water disturbs spawning and also destroys the laid eggs of fish Invasion of Destructive Organisms
Thermal pollutants may permit
the invasion of organisms that are tolerant to warm water and highly destructive. Hot water causes bacterial diseases in fishes. Change in Algae
Excessive nutrients from the
washout waters from lands, combined with thermal pollution cause an excessive growth of algae like diatoms, green and blue-green algae. This affects the acquatic food chain and thereby increase in toxicity to fishes and cut short their longevity. MEASURES TO REDUCE THERMAL POLLUTION Letting out the hot industrial effluents into artificial ponds and allow them to cool before discharging into rivers, streams and lakes. Arranging for cooling towers in large industries. Channeling of thermal effluents to power generating plants. CONCLUSION Thermal pollution is a growing environmental problem caused by human activities and affects our water resources and the species within them.
