pronoun for the underlined nouns.

experiences tight times.
2. The Hummel children are very thankful
for the foods Beth gives them.
3. Mr. Brookes is a family friend of the
Marches.
LET’S TRY THIS

In order to communicate clearly, you have

to use correct pronoun-antecedent
agreement all the time. However, you
should not only focus on number and
gender of nouns to do this. Nouns also have
cases and so you must know them in order
to use pronouns in different cases as well.
What do you think are the cases of nouns?
Try to cite some.
LET’S STUDY THIS

To be able to show proper pronoun-

antecedent agreement, you must
know the different cases of nouns
first. Nouns can be in OBJECT OF
THE PREPOSITION CASE,
NOMINATIVE CASE, or
SUBJECT OF A VERB CASE.
LET’S STUDY THIS
Here are examples of object of the preposition case
of pronouns.

Read the sentences in set A. What part of speech are the

highlighted words? . What part of speech
(prepositions)
do you usually see right next to each preposition?
(noun)
LET’S STUDY THIS

The nouns (Nathalie, Andee and Mr.

Cruz, Portia) are objects of the
prepositions (to, from, at). If you will
replace those nouns with pronouns you
must use PRONOUNS IN OBJECT OF
THE PREPOSITION CASE. Read the
sentences in set B. What can you say
about the pronouns that replace the
nouns in set A.
LET’S STUDY THIS
Here are examples of nominative case of pronouns.

Read the sentences in set A. How are the highlighted words

used in the sentences?
(subject)
LET’S STUDY THIS

The nouns (Dan, Precy, Rose and

Precy) are nouns in nominative case.
If you will replace those nouns with
pronouns you must use PRONOUNS
IN NOMINATIVE CASE. Read the
sentences in set B. What can you say
about the pronouns that replace the
nouns in set A?
LET’S STUDY THIS
Here are examples of direct object case of pronouns.

Read the sentences in set A. What is the verb in sentence 1?

(served). What was served in sentence 1? (dinner) What
pronoun must we use if we are to replace it? (it).
LET’S STUDY THIS

What is the verb in sentence 2?

(admires). Who was admired in
sentence 2? (Carlos) What pronoun must
we use if we are to replace Carlos?
(him).
What is the verb in sentence 3? (took).
What did the children take in sentence
3? (foods) What pronoun must we use if
we are to replace foods? (them).
LET’S STUDY THIS

What question about the verbs (served,

admires and took) do the nouns (dinner,
Carlos, and foods) answer? (they answer
the question “what” or “who” of the verb.)
The nouns (dinner, Carlos, and foods) are
direct objects. If you will replace those
nouns with pronouns you must use
