AutoCAD is a 2D and 3D CAD software application developed and marketed by Autodesk. It is widely used by architects, engineers, and designers. Some key features of AutoCAD include accurate technical drawing, integration with other AutoCAD files, and production of views and drawings with dimensions. The software also allows 3D modeling and editing of solid objects. The AutoCAD interface includes tools for viewing, drawing, and managing files in both 2D and 3D spaces.

INTRODUCTORY CLASS

ABOUT AUTOCAD
 AutoCAD is a Computer Aided Design(CAD) and drafting software application for 2D and 3D design.

 Developed and marketed by Autodesk.

 Widely used by architects, project managers, engineers, graphic designers, and many other professionals.

 AutoCAD was first released in December 1982.

 The latest version launched is AutoCAD 2024.

There are 40 versions of AutoCAD released up-to this date.

ADVANTAGE OF AUTOCAD
Saves more time in drafting compared to conventional hand drafting.
Drafts drawn in different AutoCAD softwares can be integrated with one another.
Low wastage in drawing.

Improved accuracy of drawing.

Reduced manpower requirements.

Easier to hatch sections.

Preparation of assembly and sub assembly drawings.

Production of orthographic projections with dimensions and tolerances.

SOME KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED HERE....

1. Types of views

Isometric View Orthographic View Perspective View

2. Coordinate System

A) Absolute Coordinate System

• All input points are specified using

standard Cartesian coordinates X &
Y.

• It’s syntax is [X, Y]

2. Coordinate System

B) Relative Coordinate System

• After locating the first point, your next

point can be entered by specifying the
next coordinate relative to the first
point’s.

• It’s syntax is [@X, Y]

2. Coordinate System

C) Polar Coordinate System

• After locating the first point, polar

coordinate system can be used when you
need to draw the next points at specific
angles.

• It’s syntax is [@distance<angle]

3D IN AUTOCAD
• We can make 3D models in AutoCAD as well.

Mechanical Drawing
• We can switch between 2D
Drafting to 3D modelling by
clicking the gear icon in the
status bar as shown.
• Modeling contains tools for basic 3D modeling shapes.
• Under the Box tool, you’ll also find cylinder, cone, sphere, pyramid, wedge, and torus.
• Under the Extrude tool, you’ll see Loft, Revolve, and Sweep.
• The other two tools on this panel are Presspull and Extrude.
• Solid Editing commands are used to modify your 3D model (Subtract, Add, Thicken, among
others).
• Draw contains the tools needed to create your design for 3D drawing, most importantly 3D
Polyline
• Modify tools work with your 3D elements such as 3D Rotate, 3D Mirror, and 3D Move.
• These can be used on shapes or models.
• Coordinates tools move and display your axis or UCS (user coordinate system) icon.
