1. Introduction to AutoCAD
• CAD: Computer Aided Design
The use of computer methods to develop the geometric model of the product in
three dimensional forms, such that the geometric and manufacturing requirements can
beexamined.

• AutoCAD is 2D and 3D modelling software.

• AutoCAD is developed by Autodesk company in 1982, December.

• AutoCAD is founded in USA by Jhon Walker

• The extension file name of AutoCAD is .DWG

2. User interface of AutoCAD
3. Coordinate system
 All objects drawn in AutoCAD are placed on the screen on the basis of a co-ordinate system
known as World Co-ordinate System (WCS).
 All points in this Co-ordinate system are located in relation to the origin.
 AutoCAD has 2 co-ordinate systems:
i)Cartesian ii) Polar
i) Cartesian Co-ordinate System:

 Cartesian co-ordinate System comprises of 2 perpendicular axes viz. x and y.

 Every point is located w.r.t origin (0,0) and specified in the following way:
x,y.
 Overall plane is divided into 4 parts:
1st quadrant (+X,+Y)
2nd quadrant (-X,+Y )
3rd quadrant (-X,-Y)
Relative Co-ordinate:

 If a pt.’s co-ordinates are given w.r.t previous pt. then these co- ordinates are called the Relative co-
ordinates of that pt.
 Relative co-ordinates are specified in the following way:
1. If Dynamic Input is Off then we have to use @ symbol to enter relative co- ordinate.
2.If Dynamic Input is On by default the co-ordinates are entered relative to the previous pt.

ii) Polar Co-ordinate System:

 We have 2 co-ordinates in this co- ordinate system as well but here the co-ordinates are radial distance
from the origin and angular displacement from the +ve x axis in Counter-Clockwise Direction (CCW).
 The points are specified in the following way: r<θ.
7.Dimensioning
 Arrow heads, also called symbols of termination, are displayed at each end of the dimension line. We can
specify different sizes and shapes for arrow heads or tick marks.
 Extension lines, also called projection lines or witness lines, extend from the feature to the
dimension line.
 A center mark is a small cross that marks the center of a

circle or arc.
 Centerlines are broken lines that mark the center of a circle or arc.
The steps are listed below:
• Select Annotate tab>Quick Dimension, as shown in the
below image: Or. ...
• Select the geometry to dimension. We can select any part
of the object. ...
• Press Enter.
• Place the dimension to the desired position.

4.Draw Toolbar:
Select Object allows you to select an object.
• Point allows you to place a point on the canvas.
• Arc allows you to draw an arc.
• Line allows you to draw a line.
• Rectangle allows you to draw a rectangle.
• Ellipse allows you to draw an ellipse.

5. Modify toolbar
• Perform editing operations such as erase, move,
and trim on the objects in a drawing.

CATIA V5 R20
OUTLINE
1. Introduction
2. User interface of CATIA
3. Toolbars in workbench part design
4. Sketch mode sketchers
5. Generation of bodies in workbench partdesign
6. Creating Assemblies in workbench Assembly design
7. Conclusion
1. Introduction
• CATIA: Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application
• The first release of CATIA was way back in 1977.
• The most popular version of CATIA is V5 which was introduced in 1998.
• The CATIA software is written in C++. It runs on both Unix and Windows.
• CATIA provides the capability to visualize designs in 3D.
• The software comes with different workbenches (“modules”) that allow CATIA to be used
across varied industries – from parts design, surface design and assembly to sheet metal
design.
