Grade 5 Patterns and Algebra

The document discusses patterns and algebra, specifically how to formulate the rule in finding the next term in a sequence. It provides an example of a sequence where each term is the previous term plus 2, and explains how to look for the pattern to determine the rule. The document then presents an activity where students will work in groups to name a girl by finding terms in sequences and matching letters to numbers.

PATTERNS &ALGEBRA
Formulates the Rule in Finding
the Next term in a Sequence
M5AL-III-14
What is sequence?
A sequence is an ordered list of
numbers in which successive terms
follow a rule of pattern. Each number
in the sequence is called a term.
Example:
1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21…
Term symbol to continue
forward in the pattern.
A. Let us explore the process.
Step 1. Look for the pattern in the sequence of
the number.
1,3,6,10,15,21

• To find the 2nd term add 2, for the 3rd term

add 3, for the 4th term add 4, for the 5th
term add 5, and for the 6th term add 6.
• Therefore, the rule in the sequence is
(+2,+3,+4,+5,+6).
B. Look for the rule and find next three terms of the
sequence.
3, 6, 12, _24_, _48_, _96_
Solution
Rule: Multiply by 2.(x2)

3x2=6 24x2=48
6x2=12 48x2=96
12x2=24
ACTIVITY:
The class will have a group game called “Find
My Name” using the printed sheet and each group
consist five (5) each members.

Mechanics:
a. Name the girl by finding the next 5 th term of the
following sequence.
b. Match column A with column B by writing the
corresponding letter in the given number below.
c. Then, name the girl on the blank below the
picture.
A. B.

1. 3,6,9,12,… 2. 5,10,15,20,…
A. 18
L. 25
3. 28,24,20,16,… 4. 1,3,5,7,… B. 35
E. 15
5. 30,27,24,21,… S. 12
___,___,___,___,___ I. 9
