3D Printing

3D printing involves creating physical objects from digital 3D models through an additive manufacturing process of laying down successive layers of material. It was invented in the 1980s for rapid prototyping but is now used across industries like aerospace, medical, and consumer products. There are several types of 3D printing that use different materials and techniques. The 3D printing process involves designing a digital model, sending it to a 3D printer, and depositing layers of material to build the physical object layer by layer.

Definition
• Process of making a physical object from
a three-dimensional digital model,
typically by laying down many thin layers
of a material in succession.
Origin of 3D Printing
• 3D printing, also
known as additive
manufacturing, was
first invented in the
1980s by Chuck Hull,
who co-founded 3D
Systems, a company
that specializes in the
production of 3D
printing equipment
and materials.
Origin of 3D Printing Cont’
• The technology was
initially used for
rapid prototyping in
the manufacturing
industry, as it
allowed for the
creation of physical
models directly from
digital designs.
Origin of 3D Printing Cont’
• Over time, the technology
has evolved to include a
wider range of materials
and applications, from
creating personalized
prosthetics and dental
implants to producing
intricate architectural
models and even food
Origin of 3D Printing Cont.’
• Today, 3D printing has
become a widely used
manufacturing technique
in various industries,
including aerospace,
automotive, and medical,
and it continues to
advance rapidly as
researchers and engineers
explore new materials and
techniques for printing
more complex and
functional objects.
Main areas of use

• Prototyping
• Specialized parts –
aerospace, military,
biomedical engineering,
dental
• Hobbies and home use
• Future applications–
medical (body parts),
buildings and cars
Current and Future Application

Biomedical Engineering

• to create body parts and

parts of an organ
• creating limbs and other body
parts out of metal or other
materials to replace lost or
damaged limbs
Current and Future Application

Construction and Architecture

• to create a model of the
layout or shape
• to create entire buildings
• replace many cranes and
even construction workers
with these printing system

TYPES OF 3D PRINTING

STEREOLITHOGRAPHY (SLA) SPECIFIC LASER SINTERING (SLS)

• It works by a 3D printing
technique called Vat
Polymerization where a
material called a photopolymer
gum is specifically restored by a
light source.
• Stereolithography (SLA) is the
first modern 3D printing
measure
TYPES OF 3D PRINTING

POLYJET Fused Deposition Modeling

(FDM) aka Fused Filament
Fabrication (FFF)
• PolyJet is another plastic 3D
printing measure, yet there’s
a curve. It can create various
parts with different
properties, for example, tones
and materials. Architects can
use the innovation for
prototyping elastomeric or
over-molded parts.
TYPES OF 3D PRINTING

Digital Light Process (DLP) Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)

• DLP has quicker print times

than SLA in light of the fact
that each layer is uncovered
at the same time, rather than
following the cross-part of a
zone with the purpose of a
laser.
Designing for 3D Printing

Points to Consider

• the part needs to be

solid, that is, not just a
surface; it needs to have
a real volume.
Designing for 3D Printing

Points to Consider Cont.

• Creating very small, or

delicate features may not
be printed properly, this
depends greatly
on the type of 3D printer
that is going to be used
Designing for 3D Printing

Points to Consider Cont.

• Parts with overhanging
features will need supports
to be printed properly. This
should be
taken into account since
after the model needs to
be cleaned by removing
the supports.
This may not be an issue
unless the part is very
delicate, since it might
break
Designing for 3D Printing

Points to Consider Cont.

• Be sure to calibrate the
3D printer before using it,
it is essential to ensure
that the part
sticks properly to the
build plate. If it does not,
at some point the part
may come loose and
ruin the entire print job.
Designing for 3D Printing

Points to Consider Cont.

• Some thought should be

given to the orientation of
the part, since some
printers are more
precise on the X and Y
axes, then the Z axis.

How Does 3D Printing Work

• 3D printing is a process of creating a

physical object from a digital model
by adding successive layers of
material on top of one another.

• The process starts with a digital 3D

model that is created using
computer-aided design (CAD)
software or scanned using a 3D
scanner.
How Does 3D Printing Work
Cont.

• Once the digital model is ready, it is

sent to a 3D printer, which reads the
model and starts the printing
process.

• The printer uses a variety of

materials, including plastic, metal,
and even living cells, to create the
final product.
How Does 3D Printing Work
Cont.

• The printing process starts with the

printer heating the material, which
is then extruded through a nozzle in
a controlled manner to form the
first layer of the object.

• The nozzle moves back and forth

over the printing surface, depositing
the material layer by layer until the
object is complete.
How Does 3D Printing Work
Cont.

• The printing process can take

anywhere from several minutes to
several days, depending on the size
and complexity of the object being
printed.
• Once the printing is complete, the
object is removed from the printer
and may require some finishing
touches, such as sanding or
polishing, to achieve the desired
final appearance.
